How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have cleared the outstanding debts on the land that I bought using the previous transfer. We live in a small pieces of land with the extended family. I have always wished to purchase another piece of land. I do small scale farming and the harvest that I get annually is so small and only for consumption. I also operate a small scale business of selling maize and fruits. This earns me a daily income to meet my daily household needs. I had no extra money to saved so that I can buy a piece of land. When I received the first transfer I paid KES 15,000 and the balance of KES 15,00 I paid using the second transfer. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to clear the balance. I am now doing horticulture farming on my farm. I will be able to get enough produce to feed my family and sell the extra at the market to earn an income. Currently I am planning to relocate to the new land. I am saving the money from my business to buy the building material. This will be the biggest day of my life when I build a a house on my land. GiveDirectly has changed my living standard. It has enabled us to own assets which could have taken quite some time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to pay school fees. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 of the second transfer to purchase a heifer. I always buy milk daily and this is so costly for me. When my dairy cow reproduce I will be able to cut the daily cost of buying milk. I also paid the balance of the land that I bought using the previous transfer of KES 15,000. I am so grateful because now I can do the horticulture farming as I plan to relocate. The rest of the money I bought two sacks of maize and milk for my family. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our lives.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had began my daily menial jobs when I heard my phone ringing,a notification of a message. I thought it was the normal promotional messages but to my surprise, I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I was greatly overjoyed and thanked GiveDirectly for fulfilling their promise to us.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now owning a dairy cow and two goats. This livestock is an asset to me which I can rely on in case of a financial need. Besides being an asset, I am expecting that they reproduce and increase in number and have many of them. I will sell the offspring to raise fees for my children who are still young. I will also be getting milk from the cow for my family's consumption and sell the surplus thus earning an income. I will no longer be buying milk from anyone.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the transfer KES 30000 of my first transfer on buying livestock which include a cow and two goats. These are assets to me which I can readily rely on in case of a financial needs. I am also planning to sell the offsprings in the future to raise fees for my children. Apart from this, I also did some shopping on buying new clothes for myself and for my children. I spent the remaining transfer on buying enough foodstuffs that will serve us for a month which include flour and rice.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been dreaming of purchasing a piece of land of my own of around 70,000 shillings. Currently, I am still at my parent's land. We have around 4-acre piece of land to be shared amongst 5 siblings and mostly according to our tradition ladies are excluded. The remaining amount I will use to purchase a dairy cow. At the moment, I am forced to buy 3 liters of milk and it is quite expensive because I spend 50 shillings per liter every single day.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Since I am doing casual jobs, lt is in the evening we count on our profits. I am happy at this time knowing that atleast I will put food on the table for my family
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced is lack of stable income to raise my family as single parent. At the moment, I am forced to do casual jobs at Sigor Centre for a living. On a good day I earn 250 shillings and this hardly enough to cater for my family's basic needs.
