How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My main goal is to ensure that my children live a comfortable life. I'm working hard to ensure that they never lack basic needs.I want them to have quality education because education is key to success. I also want to give them the best health care services. My second goal is to practice goat keeping. I find goats very useful because I can sell them and pay school fees for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The most outstanding right thing about Give Directly is that it does not discriminate people. Transfers are awarded fairly. You do not depend on rumours. Your aim of eradicating poverty is also a good thing. I always pray for Give Directly so that you may continue changing people's lives. Everything about you is okay, there is actually nothing to improve on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The second transfers came in at the right time. I was constructing a 3 roomed house but it was not yet complete. So I used part of it to buy 16 iron sheets @ kshs 950, trees worth kshs 5000, wood and ropes worth kshs 3,500. I also paid a merry go round loan worth kshs 8,000. I had delayed to pay this loan because I fell ill and was unable to pay. My children didn't have decent beddings so I bought for them a mattress and a bed which cost kshs 11,000 . I have 3 primary school going children, they had a fees balance of kshs 4,000. So I paid it. Finally, I bought one and a half bale of maize flour worth kshs 3,450. I really appreciate because were it not for Give Directly, I could never have done all these.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to take my phone to my sister's house at around 7 in the evening when I noticed that there was a new message. Without hesitating I decided to check who it was. I was so surprised to learn that I had received my first cash transfer from GiveDirectly. I couldn't hold my joy at that particular moment and decided to rush back home. We were all excited as a family because we finally knew that we would achieve a lot.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers, I have been able to accomplish one of my goals of owning goats. It has been my dream to have at least one but I couldn't afford it because they were relatively expensive. I purposefully settled for them because of my kid's education journey. Currently, they are still in primary schools and I am certain that by the time they will be transitioning to secondary schools and colleges, I will have so many goats that will be of help. I will sell some and clear their fees and finance their stay in school. I had to think of these assets since my spouse is the family breadwinner of six, and it has been quite a challenge to provide for our basic needs like food. I am therefore hopeful that I will not have to strain once they graduate to further studies. Seeing then grabbing better education is all I have been wanting since I believe it will eradicate the poverty life that has been stricken us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first cash transfer on buying building materials such as building poles and nails which cost KES 5000. This was for the addition of one room since the previous house was very small and it could barely accommodate all my family members. I, therefore, felt there was a need to renovate it since two of my kids used to sleep at their uncle's house. Also, I hired a friend to prepare my farm since it was planting season and I was not energetic enough to till the whole farm. Additionally, I settled a debt of KES 10000 and I now feel peace of mind. To add to that, I cleared school fees of KES 7000 for my four kids who are in primary schools and kindergartens. Currently, they are settled without any disturbances. Additionally, I had to purchase a solar panel which has been of help, especially at night and charging our phones. Lastly, I bought four goats which act as living assets that I can readily rely on.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have married 16 years ago after failing to join secondary school due to school fees problems. While I was in primary school, I desired to take a business course that would equip me with knowledge and run my businesses in the future. Though I did not get a chance to pursue that course my dream of becoming a businesswoman has never died. Receiving tho money means achieving my longing. I am planning to spend 60,000 KES to start a business ( shop). This will generate income for my family of 6. Approximately, I will be making 500 KES in a day which is enough to cater to all my basic needs such as food and shelter. Other than that, I will spend the remaining amount to pay school fees for my children who are in the secondary level.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I used to stay in a small structure which looks like a kiosk. The house was not enough to accommodate my 4 children and they used to seek shelter from our neighbor. January this year my husband received a token of cash and decided to build a spacious house for us. This brought a lot of joy to my life because it was something I was desiring.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
For the past 5 years, I have been suffering from ulcers. This problem has been disturbing my health and also the financial status of my family. I have been living under medication for a week I spend at least 500 KES per dose. My health had deteriorated to an extent I can no longer be productive in any casual job which I used to perform before. Therefore, sickness is the biggest hardship I am currently facing.
