Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in my house extremely tired after spending the whole day working on the farm. I had just completed taking dinner and was about to sleep when I heard celebrations from the neighborhood. My phone was with the helper who come to the house running and disclose the information about the receipt of the transfer. I was very happy for receiving the aid that would change my life for the better.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a decent house is the biggest difference in my life. Currently, I am enjoying the nights and no longer worried about the safety of family members. Furthermore, I am happy after boosting the livestock rearing a long-term investment for the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer to repair the house which was collapsing. I was living a worried life that the house might fall anytime while asleep something that gave me sleepless nights. In addition, I spent KES 9000 to boost goat rearing as an alternative source of income for myself by buying 3 goats. My long-term goal is to sell them once they reproduce whenever I am faced with any financial. Lastly, I spent that remaining amount to seek medical care since I have been undergoing mental illness treatment. I am very grateful that the condition is lessening and optimistic that I will recover fully after proper treatment using the aid.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of only one person. My husband died twenty years ago. Since then I have been struggling with life alone. I do agriculture as my work. I have a piece of land worthy 5 acres. I am living in a muddy house with a roof that is leaking during rains season. The roof has never been changed since it was built. I will use KES 90000 to renovate my house and change it to a permanent house. I will also use KES 20000 to buy food. It is two years now without rain in our village. This has caused famine to me. This money with provide food for me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The government of Kenya through the local administration brought relief food in our village on March 2022. I got one bag of 50kg. This food has lasted for three two months now. The relief food brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I depend on agricultural for food and due to drought in our village then I cannot do any farming. This has made me go without food for sometimes. Lack of food is the current challenge I am facing in life.
