How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since my children do not have their own separate house, I am looking forward to ensuring that they get theirs too. This thought came after planning for the second transfer, so once I get some money this will be the first priority to work on before embarking on other goals that I may develop as time goes by.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is a true support organization that has a clear intent of helping. Giving me cash was a well thought idea to enable me to choose what I need most so that I can make my life a little bit comfortable. If it were not for GiveDirectly I would not be having the solar panel at my home and I would be still staying in darkness for some time due to lack of money to buy paraffin.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I sometimes used to stay in darkness at night due to lack of money to buy paraffin, I placed the lighting system as a priority in my plans. After withdrawing the second transfer, I bought a solar panel and with bulbs worthy KES 20000.00. As at now we have enough light at home, even at the center of the night it’s like a day time due to the light which lights up my home compound. I also used KES 2000.00 for medication after I fell sick. Thereafter, I decided to keep the remaining amount to aid me in family maintenance matters since we were passing through a drought season.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 10am in one of the fine mornings when I was from fetching some water in the well is when I received the transfer message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and ululated inwardly since I did not want people to know that I have received the money. While thanking God for bringing GiveDirectly to me, I sat alone in my house and drew a plan on how I was going to spend the money on. Two days later is when I withdrew the money already having my expenditure plan.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially I only relied on making and selling charcoals as well as working in other peoples shambas to earn a living. Having been in this kind of toiling for a while my body and strength can no longer support such type of work. I have been living depending on my family members and relatives. But GiveDirectly brought a difference in my life; I can now buy food, washing soap and clothes on my own not as before. I also have a cow which I know after some time I will be milking and I will sell the milk of which that will be a source of income and also take some for consumption because it’s also healthy to take milk. My sincere appreciation to the whole GiveDirectly family. May God bless them all.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After withdrawing the money, I took KES 10,000.00 and bought a cow. This was the 1st plan I had since I wanted to have something that will mark the assistance from GiveDirectly even in future because I know the cow will multiply and the presence of the cows at my home will be symbolizing GiveDirectly even in future. I also took KES 10,000.00 and paid school fees for my grandchildren as a sign of reciprocating to the good deeds their parents have been doing for me at my lowest moments of life. I also bought myself some nice clothes and saved the rest for my other personal needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money mean better education for my grand children. I gave birth to 3 sons who live here at home with me but their economic activities is to burn charcoal whatever they get cater to feed their children only. Thus they have been unable to raise school fees to educate their kids. As their grandmother I plan to use first transfer to clear huge balances they have in their schools, the second transfer I plan to construct a semi- permanent house for me and my husband.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. As a casual worker I wake up early in the morning to search for a job and I get back home at the evening. This moment I feel so happy because I know my grandchildren's school arrears will decrease in some amount.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is insufficient finances to support my grandchildren's education. My children are not well of interms of finances they do casual jobs here at the village and the income that they get is too little for them to extend to education. I have been struggling to assist them to educate their children by doing casual job that entails weeding cassava seed bed, besides my husband is too old in an extent that he cannot work to help.
