How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes. I have a new goal of constructing a spacious house for my family. This is because the house that I was very small which forced my two grown-up children to seek refuge from our neighbors something that is worrying me a lot. I intend to construct another house for my kids.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for coming up with the program in the village. Furthermore, the enrollment was conducted without discrimination and every household was given equal opportunity to voluntarily participate in the program. I don't see anything that it does not do well
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 to pay part of the cost of land which I had purchased with my transfer. This is because the land that we are currently owning is communal land where I lacked the right of ownership. My plan is to relocate to the new place that I bought with my transfer since the place where are currently living has conflict over ownership. I also spent KES 5000 to support the education of my 6 children who are still schooling.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At first I thought the registration was just a formality and a scam like the other registrations have been havingin our government. I offered to be registered because other people were being registered but I had no faith in the exercise. This was until when I heard people from a nearby village have received their transfers is when I gained some faith. At around 9am in one of the fine mornings when I was looking after my goats, i received the transfer message from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and I am now a firm believer that GiveDirectly is a real deal. It's an organization that is truly committed to assisting the less disadvantaged people.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My biggest testimony is that, I now have an alternative plot to do my farming unlike before when I was used in repeating the same portion over and over again. This has restored my happiness because am sure once the rain season starts, I will be able to get more yields than before hence my family will be comfortable. I wish ro register my sincere gratitude to the organization-GiveDirecly for seeing me through my desire as a farmer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a peasant farmer, I have been farming at the same piece of shamba year in year out. As at now the shamba is no longer productive and my family of 9 solely depends on it. My desire was to acquire another piece of land so as to continue with my farming as my only source of feeding my children. On receiving the transfer, I used KES 40,000.00 and purchased 1 acre of land, I also paid school fees for my children. I took KES 5000.00 and paid for my secondary school child and KES 2600.00 for the primary children. I also opted to increase the number of my goats by adding 1 goat which cost KES 2800.00.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means land ownership. I have been living on family land since I got married which belongs to my father in-law. Recently I bought my piece of land but it is too small for my family to reside in there and cultivate as well. I plan to use 50000 to purchase 2 acres of land for an agriculture project and also build a home. I also plan to use 15000 to buy a cow and the rest of the money to pay school fees for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning especially 9 to 10 am. I feel so happy at this time because I have already planned meals for the day unlike in the afternoon hours where I have to start thinking about what tomorrow holds.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is food insecurity in our household. The casual work that I usually do can only fetch up to 300 Kenya shillings in a day and it is irregular . This is not enough to meet basic needs of my family members especially food. Besides we could not do subsistence farming due to insufficient land. Hence we sometimes go to bed hungry.
