"My goal is to extend my house so that my children would have enough space for sleep. The house that I currently live in is a two-roomed house which is not enough to accommodate us considering the large family that I have. I would therefore like to extend it with one room and to achieve this, I would continue saving $20 of my monthly transfers so that at the end of this year, I would have enough money to help with the construction. I would also want to join a chama (informal cooperative society that is normally used to pool and invest savings) and later buy a dairy cow that would be of help in terms of selling milk and I believe that the returns that I would be getting would help in terms of educating my children."

"My main goal for the next one year and beyond is to see my children go to school without any challenges. And therefore, I would want to start a livestock-rearing project (goats) that would help me in the future in case I am faced with financial challenges. I would also want to expand my current greengrocery business so that I would have increased profits that would be enough to pay for my children’s school fees as well as catering for other necessities for my family. I, therefore, plan to buy a goat worth $20 every month with the transfers that I would be receiving and also set some amount for the business expansion."

"My main goal is to start a livestock-rearing project. I have an experience in the field because I previously had the same project before, but due to some eventualities, all my livestock died and it is something that I would like to do again since it was of great help to my family. I plan to start with chicken and later venture into the rearing of goats. I would be buying chicken worth $15 monthly with the transfers that I would be receiving from GiveDirectly for a certain period and later sell part of them to buy goats. I believe that the project would be of great help in terms of the proceeds that I would be getting."

"Currently, I have been living in a 24-iron sheet-roofed mud-walled house. One of its sides had been washed away by rains, which subjected us to cold. I hope to accomplish the goal of building a new house this year. It will go a long way in serving my household better than the current one. As a result, my family will no longer be worried about weather changes that had caused my children to suffer from cold, a situation that had been costly for me to manage."

"For this year, my primary goal is to invest in livestock keeping. At the moment, I only have a poultry farm with two hens left after losing some to a poultry-related disease outbreak. I aim to raise goats because when the herd increase, I will have an alternative source of income for my family. Therefore, in serious need n I am seriously in need. Besides, I also hope to start a new business dealing with vegetable sales because they are fast-moving goods and can fetch much in the long run"

"My goal currently is to ensure that, through the transfers, my household doesn't lack food. A food shortage has been my biggest challenge due to the prevailing harsh climatic conditions that have made it impossible for me to practice farming. I do not have an income and no one to rely on. I'm just relying on the monthly transfers for my basic needs, such as food. I am also planning to save a portion of the money every month to buy more goats. The goats can also help me to meet my future financial needs as they reproduce and increase in number."

"The biggest challenge we face presently is the openness of our compound. Livestock belonging to neighbours can enter our compound freely. The fence is not well reinforced. This has led to destruction of our crops and vegetables. This has really affected our ability to grow. We have piped water which could have relieved us the burden of buying most of our household items. Having good fencing around our compound could help a lot."

"The main challenge that we face is the biting drought that has greatly impacted our lives. It has been 3 years since we had good rains and because of this it has led to unproductivity in our farms. At the moment I have lost much livestock to the drought due to a lack of water and pasture. This has affected me financially as it is my only source of income. I have two children Brian and Sylvia who are in secondary school and depend on my livestock for their tuition fees. Since some of my livestock died I have not been able to pay for their school fees. The drought has also led to a lack of food in our household since our farms have not produced any crops in the past 3 years and we are forced to go without food sometimes. Life has been difficult for me and my family."

"I have been sheltering in a grass-thatched house for years, during which I had to replace the grass almost every month. My dream was to rebuild my house using more durable iron sheets. I could not afford them but currently, through the monthly transfers, I want to buy at least one iron sheet every month. Having an iron-roofed house will relieve the stress of replacing the roof every time, which is tiresome. My goal is to buy a total of 20 pieces of iron sheets as I continue receiving the transfers."

"The persistent drought has been a challenge. For the past three years, we have never harvested from our farms due to a lack of sufficient rain. As a result, we purchase food for consumption and also for livestock. It is very expensive to raise the money as we depend on livestock keeping to earn a living yet it fetches low prices because of deficiency."
