"My husband is indisposed after undergoing an operation of the nerves at Eldoret Referral Hospital sometime in 2015. We are a family of 5, so the dependency ratio is high since I am the only one who is left to fend for my family. The cost of operation was high amounting to $250 and therefore we were forced to sell livestock to afford it, subsequent care has also been expensive. Our lives turned for the worse since we depleted all the resources which were a source of livelihood and we have been predisposed to deprivation, it is a struggle to put food on the table and to meet even the basic needs. The menial jobs I engage is hardly enough to meet the daily demands unlike before when my husband could contribute significantly to our family."

"I am a widower and of old age, 70 years now. I have been lonely but never remarried after the demise of my wife more than 20 years ago. I am increasingly becoming feeble and unable to engage in income-generating activities like farming and this has made me sometimes lack food and subsequently resulted in my life being miserable and unbearable. I do not want to burden my children since they have several commitments to look after their families and educate their children."

received a $24 eighteenth payment.
"In the upcoming year, I aspire to achieve several significant goals through the assistance of the funds provided by the transfers. Foremost, I aim to secure a bed and mattress, a simple luxury that promises the comfort I've been longing for. Furthermore, I'm enthusiastic about expanding my livestock holdings. Presently, I own three goats and four sheep, all acquired with the funds from my monthly transfers. The organization's financial support has brought me immense happiness and I'm deeply appreciative of it."

"Increased changes in the climate has caused a lot of challenges for me. The greatest of the challenges is lack of food. Changes in weather patterns and lack of enough irrigation water has led to low productivity and therefore lack of enough food. My husband and I have to do menual work which is scarce to be able to make ends meet which very difficult."

"The main challenge that I'm facing at the moment is a lack of money especially for paying school fees for my son Kipyegon. Ever since my husband eloped with his second wife he left me to take care of my children which has forced me to sell almost all our livestock. With this hard economic times and my old age this has been a big challenge for me."

Fatuma
received a $24 twenty-first payment.
"In the coming year and beyond I would like to have expanded my business to offer a broader range of items, eventually transforming it into a larger kiosk. Currently, the offerings are limited to selling sardines and washing powder. While this venture has been successful in generating profits to support the needs of my family, I recognize the potential for greater income if I were to expand the shop's stock. With this growth, I hope it can support the education of my seven children. Also, I intend to increase my goat herd, including the two goats I acquired through previous transfers, both of which are now expectant. Currently, I possess 18 goats in total, and I envision this livestock becoming an essential asset for the financial stability of my household."

Felicita
received a $312 second payment.
"Upon receiving financial assistance from GiveDirectly, my husband and I promptly decided to allocate the funds towards addressing our most pressing needs. Foremost among these priorities was settling our son's college tuition fees, for which we dedicated $200. Additionally, I invested $200 in purchasing improved-breed goats, and I further directed the remaining $50 towards acquiring a water tank that I use for irrigating my garden. As both teachers with four children, my husband and I are deeply appreciative of the support that has brought about significant transformation within a short period. This change was previously challenging to achieve due to family responsibilities."

"The biggest difference in my day to day life is that , I effectively fenced my land, enabling uninterrupted plowing without the disruptions caused by my goats and hens. "The ongoing financial challenges I'm facing are prompting me to explore opportunities in income-generating endeavors. One of my intended projects involves the construction of a rental property, with the goal of securing a consistent monthly revenue stream. This additional income is expected to provide substantial relief for certain expenses that currently exceed my means. I find solace in the fact that the assistance provided through these transfers will empower me to realize this aspiration."
