"When I received this transfer, I was very happy because I came to believe it was a reality that I had received money from Give Directly. I have never in my life received such amount of money from anywhere. I only depend on hotel business which has not been very productive due to financial demands it has been meeting. Am glad it's never falling because of GD."

"When I received this transfer, I knelt down to thank God for what He had done to me. I could not hide my smile and the joy in me was too much. I had to take sometime in the house before breaking the news to my wife. Surely, It was a moment of joy in my life."

"The biggest difference in my life since I received this transfer is that I now have a sofa set in my house. Ever since I built my house last year, we have been sitting on a mat because I was not even able to buy seats. My daily income from casual work was too little to even cater for my family needs, leave alone buying seats. My friends thought I was too selfish to even welcome them to my house but I and my family knew the reasoon why. Ever since I bought the new seats with part of the transfer I received from GD, I have been free with everyone and they are now wondering why it took me so long to welcome them into my house. I appreciate GD for taking away my shame."

"My life will have changed in so many ways. One is that I will have brought up the bulls I bought to maturity. This will then be able to build a decent house to live in. I will also be collecting other building materials such as timber and along poles the way. will then build a house that can be used even to host guests comfortably."

Davies
received a $535 initial payment.
"I noticed I had received the message so late, first I saw a message that I cannot remember exactly how it read and another from the service provider. At least I could read that of the service provider(Mpesa), the one I am used to. This one confirmed to me that I had received money,55000 KES from GiveDirectly. I was not sure either and I had to confirm with my account balance. That is when I became sure that GiveDireclty had sent me money. My mixed feelings immediately turned to happiness. I was, and still very happy about receiving this transfer."

"I never saw the Mpesa message at the time it was sent but only realized the next day in the morning at around 7 am as people were so excited and everyone was asking someone if they had received the money. That is when I went and checked my phone. I had received 55000 KES from GiveDirectly like the others too. I was so happy and immediately started to calculate on mind how I was going to spend the money. I lacked alot of things in my house and receiving this money meant that atleast almost all my problems were over."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of stable source of income. Since my husband passed away I mainly rely on casual labour that is not reliable and does not pay well, I hardly earn one hundred shillings a day. This has made it difficult for me to invest in farming or any other business. My children do not dress well like their neighbors and this makes me feel frustrated in life because I can not afford to take good care of my family. "
