"It was around 8 am in the morning when my son requested to use my phone and I gave him. He then informed me that I had some unread messages and I requested him to read and inform me the messages it contained. To my surprise, he informed me that I had received money from GiveDirectly and that it was sent to me at 1 am. I was overwhelmed with happiness at that moment since the highest amount I have ever handled in my life is 5000 KES. The fact that I had received such a huge amount made me so happy until I did not continue taking my tea. I immediately requested him to take me to the nearest shopping centers so that I could withdraw the money as my happiness knew no bounds and I couldn't wait to have the solid money in my hands."

"My biggest dream has always been to have my own source of income without having to depend on casual jobs which are usually very unreliable. For the past few months, I have been struggling to put up a poultry project but it has been really tough due to lack of funds. The money that I received has really helped me to boost the project and I can already see the benefits.I am currently making twice as much as I did when I was working as a casual labourer. This has enabled me to easily take care of my daily household needs without having to borrow."

"Since I am a single parent, I serve as the sole breadwinner for my family of three persons. Accordingly, I am always worried that I might fail to provide adequate food for the family. As a subsistence farmer, I depend primarily on the unreliable rains to plant spring onions. For the last five years or so, we have been getting poor harvests and thus low income which could hardly meet our basic needs, especially food. "

"This year in February, I bought three cows worth kshs 38,000 for my livestock vending business.Unfortunately, two died and one got lost leaving me with no any other source of income hence financial instability. I had to wait for three months to take a loan from Imarika Sacco in May but the financial constraints I had took toll hindering me from providing food to the family. Therefore financial instability remains my biggest worry to date."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of modern skills to manage livestock and crop farming. Relying on traditional methods of farming led to loss of livestock and crops of almost 1million Kenya shillings through drought and diseases two years ago.Basically, traditional method of farming has reduced me to a subsistence farmer who can not do any development project apart from feeding the family."

"Receiving this money means I will be able to buy new bedding, I will buy chairs and buy solar that I will use to light the house. Since I do not have a reliable source of income, I find it very expensive to be buying kerosene every evening to light the house and I could not raise enough money to buy solar, this transfer is going to enable me achieve this milestone. It will also help my grandchildren because they will study using the solar light. For a long time I have slept on torn mattress with old blanket that I always felt ashamed when visited with my sisters, I will also be able to buy new mattress and blankets. I have lived with the embarrassment of having guests sitting on very old chairs in my house, I will be able to buy chairs. And to ensure I get continued supply of money, I will use the second transfer to buy cows that after a short time shall deliver and I will be able to milk them. Part of the milk will be used by the family while the rest we will sell to get money to by food for the family and save for fees of my grandchildren."
