"The biggest hardship I have faced was three months ago when I lost my mother after a long illness. I had used most of my savings on her medication leaving me broke. This has somehow led to dependence on my sisters for support but I know now I will be back on my foot due to God sent transfer by Givedirectly."

"In the next six months, I will have bought a cow. I want to buy this because it will help me to get an income from its mil. I will keep it on our farm and raise it up to produce milk. I also expect to have joined college. I will further my education as I continue to receive this money and use it for upkeep."

Francisca
received a $195 initial payment.
"Ever since I started a business with the money I received, there has been a lot of peace in my household since I no longer have constant quarrels with my husband over money for food and other household requirements. I now make enough money to purchase most of these items on my own therefore don't have to depend on him. I previously relied on domestic jobs which were unreliable and I would most often come back home empty-handed. On such days, I would wait for my husband to come back home before we could buy any food as we waited for him to provide the money. This mostly angered him and caused the quarrells."

"The biggest difference in my life since I received this transfer is that I was able to lease in a piece of land which I will use for planting sugarcane. From experience with other villagers, I have seen their lives change from the sale of sugarcane. Since it is harvested three times and the input takes place once, the profit margin is always reasonable. I have always desired to plant sugarcane because I know from it my life will help solve some of my family financial demands. This is a dream which has been accomplished with the help of GD. The profit from the sales of my sugarcane will be used to start a retail shop which will expand our source of income and help meet my family financial needs."

"When I received this transfer, I was very happy. This is because it is the first time I received such amount of money in my life. The highest amount I have received in my life is 5000 KES when I was working as caretaker two years back."

"The biggest difference in my life since I received this transfer is that I have my own sheep. Before I got married, my mother used to encourage us that we should always strive to have at least one type of livestock of our own. She used to say out this livestock, we could raise money easily and very fast by selling them to help solve other financial needs within the family without having to beg for help or borrow money. This was a good idea and I have always tried my best to ensure that I have my own. Since I only depended on casual work and the income from the same is too little, I have not been able to afford any type of livestock. When I received this transfer from GD, I first thought of my mother's advice on investing hence I went to buy three sheep. I believe now if I have any urgent financial need, I can sell one of them to raise money to solve the issue. For now, I will keep them and hope they will keep on increasing so that I can sell part of the flock to buy cows."

"I literally jumped and shouted 'YES' when I saw the text message, someone would even think I had won the lottery. I was this happy because I knew the money would help sort out my mother's business/financial situation and help me boost my own busness which has laways been the same since I started it two years ago."

Barack
received a $195 initial payment.
"I am currently jobless and my biggest plan is to start a shoe business with my next transfer so that I can stop being idle and also be able to support my parents in paying school fees for my three siblings in high school. They do not have a stable income as my mother depends on casual domestic jobs while my father relies on peasant farming back in the village. Part of the money will be used to pay the school fees."

"Other than just supplying fruits to the feeding centre, I plan to open a fruit store in my area to supply the whole estate at a cheaper. I am sure this will be a great success because there is no such store around here and the local greengrocers sell theirs at quite a high price making them unaffordable for most residents. On top of that, I will also open a general store where I will employ one of my friend to run when I am on deliveries."

"Securing a good job has been the biggest challenge in my life. This is due to lack of education. I am a standard five drop out and all my entire life, I have been doing casual jobs that earn me very little. I decided to do farming in our village but due to little rains, the harvests are not sustainable. This means that I have to struggle all the time to feed and educate my children"
