"Receiving this money will enable me to buy a dairy cow that will in turn produce milk for sale. This will bring to an end the struggle of engaging in casual jobs that are usually unreliable. I have always thought of farming tomatoes and onions since its profitable and the weather patterns in this area favours it, thus this money will ensure i buy quality seeds and fertilizer."

"Unpredictable rainfall patterns in this area has been the biggest hardship i face. Farming has become undependable as compared to 10 years ago whereby we used to get quality and plenty harvest which ensured i never struggled in fulfilling the needs of my family. I have ended up selling part of my land and livestock to pay school fees for my children who are studying at the university. This therefore means initiating bigger and income generating projects is a great challenge"

"My family(parents)own a very small piece of land. This is not enough to be shared among my brothers and I so that everyone gets a piece to till and provide for their families. My children need food and other daily needs. As a result,I am forced to work as a casual labourer day in day out to fend for them.My palms are blistered all over because of the rough farm work I do daily. At some point,I had saved up some money and leased a piece where I planted maize.Luck was however not on my side as a crop disease wiped out the entire farm.I was left to start all over again. This is the biggest hardship I have faced"

"Running a shop business has been my greatest ambition ever since I was married five years ago but this dream has never come through in my life due to financial challenges. I have remained a house wife something that stress up my mind because I depend on my husband who is a casual worker and his earnings are never enough to fully sustain our basic needs. When I receive my transfers from GiveDirectly, my plan was to start a small shop within our village since there is non as at today and this will earn me profit to supplement the little income from my husband. The remaining amount will support me in buying an oxen to help in upscaling my farming. This will reshape my life for the better, a transformation that I have wished for long."

"Lack of serious medical care due to financial challenges has been my biggest hardship. This is because, I am a widow who is a dependant to my sons who are doing casual jobs at Mombasa. Their incomes has been limited due to the more responsibilities they have for their families, something that has made me not to seek serious medical care ever since I was diagnosed with my health problem. This has affected me psychologically, making my health deteriorating day by day."

"My plan in the next six months is to buy building materials such as iron sheets and timber which I want to use in building a house. I do not have one and I have to share at my friend's house. At my age, I cannot put up with my grandmother in the same house according to our culture. This is why I wish to have my own so as to have some privacy."
