Christina
received a $536 initial payment.
"I heard my phone ring at around 5:00 am in the morning that day. On checking to check the content of the message, I realized that I had just received a sum of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I had been expecting to receive this transfer but not at that time of the day. I was overwhelmed with joy as I thought of how I was going to spend the money to reap maximum benefits from it."

Ivine
received a $536 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that I have been able to buy a cow and fenced my compound. These are things that I would not have accomplished up to date had I not received this transfers. I now have peace of mind as well having accomplished the things I thought I would not have accomplished anytime soon. I am sure that in the near future I will be more financially able and able to meet most of my expenses without entirely depending on casual labor like I have always done. I look forward to accomplishing much more once I receive my second transfer."

Mercy
received a $22 twentieth payment.
"I hope that six months from now, I will no longer strain much doing casual jobs since I believe my poultry will have picked hence enough eggs for sale. My children education will also improve because they will consistently be in school without them having to be sent home for school fees since I will have accumulated enough money from the sale of goats."

"If I could not have received the money from give directly I could not have managed to buy cow and sure I could have died without owning a cow in my life. I could also not have managed to hire tractor to till my farm, I could have used the ox plough which is very slow and I could have still planted late and lead to law yield."

"Receiving this money will enable me build an iron -roofed house. We currently live in a hut which even though it is not so small,it is a bit congested. My children are all grown now and we all have to share this house which is not quite right.I intend to build a separate one so that this one can serve as the kitchen and sleeping place for my daughters.I will also buy a cow which to me is a form of investing the money as well as increasing our household income from sale of milk"

"I live in a small house(one room) which I feel is squeezed given that my family is growing.I therefore have a plan of using my first transfer of 550 USD to build another house and buy furniture.I will build a one bed roomed house. With the second transfer I will buy two dairy cows. What I get as a motorcycle taxi rider is not enough to satisfy all the family's needs. This is what prompted me to think of dairy farming. While I am away at work my wife will be looking after the cows."

Garama
received a $518 second payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now self-employed. Before receiving GiveDirectly's transfers I used to do casual jobs around the village . From this, I used to earn KES 250 on a day which could barely meet my family's needs. Starting a small retail business using the transfers is a great opportunity I have attained through GiveDirectly's donations in my life since it has enabled me to meet my family's daily needs with ease . Secondly , securing a solar lamp for lighting at night has been very advantageous since I no longer have to incur the daily expenses of buying paraffin which was so costly."

Angeline
received a $518 second payment.
"The biggest difference in my life is that I have extended my house meaning adding extra room where my children can sleep in . Before, we used to sleep with my children in one room and since they were growing up, I felt to myself it will reach a point in time , where it will be a taboo to sleep with them in one room . At the same time privacy was not maintained because at the stage of growth where they are at . They are very inquisitive and curious. Currently, I have a decent spacious house, therefore, my children have their one room to sleep and do their homework without any destruction. I also don't feel shy to welcome visitors to my house because I have a nice home unlike before , whenever I had family meetings I used to shy off to welcome them inside the house because there was no space to accommodate them. All in all I am grateful to GiveDirectly."
