Loice
received a $535 second payment.
"Before the transfers, I did not have any kind of livestock in my compound neither did I own any. I would have loved to have some but I could not. I just used to admire my neighbours' livestock. This is why I decided to buy at least two goats to start with as I work on getting more livestock. When these reproduce, I will have a number and use them to exchange for a cow and I will have fulfilled my dream. Without the transfers, I would not have managed to have my own livestock by now."

"The biggest hardship I have faced is difficulty in cultivating crops. I don't have oxen to plough my farm land and this has always delayed me to plant hence leading to poor harvest."

"My life is very different from how it would have been if it were not to GD's support because I have seen my shop expand as far as stock is concerned. Before the shop alone could not sustain the household expenses but as per now, it goes to the extent of paying my children's school fees and affording luxury lifestyle."

Farida
received a $535 initial payment.
"I am planning to spent part of my first transfer on buying a second-hand tuk-tuk. I am planning to purchase it because My spouse has been employed for years from neighbors and he was being paid on commission. The little he could get, he had to give a certain percentage to the owner. This made our lives to be poor because we have some basic needs to meet for our children. We could sometimes even starve because my spouse and I could not afford it. Our children were also being sent home every now and then for fees and due to the low financial status, they could stay even for weeks. In addition to that I am planning to buy some chicken and will start a business selling the young once ones they mature. This will boost our living standards because at least I will be having something to depend on. The little amount of money that remained, I bought some foodstuffs for my family."

"Poor health characterized by constant chest pain and migraine is my biggest hardship. This has made it difficult for me and I have to depend on my family for a living. My husband is equally old and he also cannot support me anymore. Even the ones I am depending on do not provide enough because they have their own families to cater for. That's why even though I am sick it is very difficult to get proper medication."

"Our financial status is so unstable that it cannot sustain us fully. My husband studies and works part time as a casual labourer. This means he does not have enough money to provide for us. At some point I tried a snacks business to supplement our income but it failed due to lack of enough capital. Therefore, I have left the entire burden on him and it is quite a hustle for us to get the basic needs especially food."

Richard
received a $517 second payment.
"After receiving the transfers, I have achieved to restock my livestock keeping business. I had spent all the money and sold cattle that I had on hospital bills for my wife. I was glad to be able to own livestock again! Cows are important to me when it comes to paying school fees and feeding my family. I could easily raise school fees by selling some of the animals and also from selling milk. The money from GiveDirectly put me back to the position where I can handle my household responsibilities."

received a $517 second payment.
"My life is different from how it would be because as we speak I have moved to a bricked, iron-roofed house with a plastered floor. I have all the necessities that a household requires thanks to GD's transfers. Before, I was in a grass-thatched house with a mud wall. I did not have utensils and the floor was also mud. This was uncomfortable but bearable because there was no option out."
