"My life is different in that I managed to build a new iron roofed house. I did not have a good house. I was only sheltering in a grass thatched hut. I am happily staying with my family in the new house, which is the greatest achievement to me. I also paid for my children's school fees which was a challenge to me. I paid for them on time through this transfer. I also replaced my old bedding with new ones and at least I can now afford to sleep comfortably."

"A larger portion of my transfer went to buying livestock. I now have goats and cows which I am keeping. Had it not been this money, I wouldn't have purchased any at my own cost. These are assets to me that I can readily lean on in case of a financial problem. I am expecting them to reproduce and have many of them. I will be selling milk that the heifers will be producing and earn an income."

Kadzo received a $518 second payment.
"I now have a decent shelter after many years of living in my neighbours compound. I managed to construct a new house, I purchased iron sheets, building poles and paid for the labour cost. Without this transfer, I don't think I would have managed at my own cost to construct the house considering the financial hardships that I was facing. I also have some livestock that I am rearing. These are assets to me that I can readily depend on in case of a financial need."

"My daughter passed on in the year 2003 and left behind a grand child whom I have been taking care of him since I had made a promise to her to do so. With dependency on casual jobs, providing basic necessities including education to this boy has been an uphill task for me. I have had to engage myself into hard labour in order to cater for him. Now he is in secondary school level and I intend to see him through his education."

"The biggest difference in my life ever since GiveDirectly came into my life is that I was able to improve my home. I tiled the floor which makes it appealing and easy to clean and maintain. It has also saved me from doing regular maintenance. I will no longer have to endure the task of smearing the walls and floor after every rainy season."

"Access to education is a right to every child. It is one of the basic needs every child should be granted. None of my kids forced me to sell my small piece of land but since it is my responsibility to ensure they are educated, I had to find all means to ensure they didn't drop out of school. I know it could have rendered us homeless but it is the only option I had. I thank this organization because it is through their help that I managed to retain my land."

"My ambition has been to start livestock keeping but due to financial constraints, this dream has not yet fulfilled. Receiving this money means that I will purchase a pair of oxen $ 800 and an ox plow at $ 300. I will train them on how to dig so that they help me cultivate my shamba and this will provide me with enough food for my family."

"My desire has been to start livestock keeping since I wish to have a long term investment. I am planning to purchase 2 indigenous dairy cows $ 800 and 4 goats $ 100.This will mean a good future for my family because I will be able to sell them when they multiply and educate my two children who are still in nursery school. I am planning to spend the extra amount to repair my house which is leaking during the rainy season."

"In the next six months, we have plans of continuing to take part in the merry go round and save up enough money with an intention to buy land. It is through this savings plan that I will be able to achieve this goal. The current piece of land that we are staying in currently is small. We can hardly do farming and my kids have to go to my neighbor's homestead whenever they want to play. I can't wait to buy land so that I can start my farming activities and improve the general wellbeing of my family."
