Jackson
received a $493 initial payment.
"Since I had been longing to own a permanent house, I spent a big portion of my first transfer on buying some building materials. They include some bags of cement, sand, and bricks. The previous house was very very small and temporary. To add to that, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family that would last for two weeks' time."

Jannet
received a $493 initial payment.
"I spent part of my first transfer on buying some beddings such as a bed and mattress. This was to replace the old traditional beddings which I was not comfortable with. I also bought some livestock such as goats which will serve as the living assets that I will lean on in case of any financial difficulties. I also bought some decent clothes for my children and enough foodstuffs, that would take us to the next harvesting seasons."

"It was around seven in the morning when I was heading to the market when I heard my phone ringing continuously. I was a bit shocked and decided to check who it could be. On checking, I realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I had finally my first transfer as promised. Due to the excitement that I had, I had to return back home and celebrate with the rest of my family members."

received a $493 initial payment.
"I spent KES 30,000 of my transfer on a dairy cow because it will act as an income source for my family in future. Before, I used to buy a litre of milk each day at a cost of KES 50 for the past twenty years and the journey has not been easy because I used to rely majorly on casual labor. KES 20,000 was spent on a 24 Iron roofed two roomed house because I used live in a grass thatched roof which was very tiny and couldn't accommodate my kids who are now all grown up. I also spent KES 4000 on a maize sack because I used to buy maize meal from my casual labor which most of the time wouldn't be sufficient to feed my family. As we speak my kids are very because there adequate food unlike before when we used to eat from hand to mouth right my kids are very happy. I also spent KES 5000 on latest clothing for my family because initially we used to put on second hand clothes which goes for as low as KES 30 because we couldn't afford the decent ones."
