Benard
received a $494 second payment.
"I spend part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on buying a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and this was so costly for me, I found it wise to invest on this. The rest of the money I bought food for the family and boosted my small business. I am so grateful for the support because it has enabled us to own assets which could have taken quite some time to get."

"I spend part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on buying two dairy cows. This has always been my wish because I used to occur a lot of expenses on buying milk daily. I also build a better house for my family. The house we had was so small and could not host all the family comfortably. The rest of the money I paid school fees and bought food. My children are no longer sent home to collect the school fees and this improved their performance compared to the previous terms. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

Erick
received a $494 second payment.
"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have build a better house. I depend on small scale farming and casual jobs in the village to earn an income to meet all my household needs. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and could not enable me to buy the building material. Currently I have a spacious house on the land that I bought using the previous transfer. I am so happy because now I have two important assets. GiveDirectly has changed my living standard and it has vibe with us hope to work much easier than before."

received a $511 second payment.
"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have paid school fees for my children in various schools. They used to be sent home to collect the school fees and this was affecting their performance since lessons were on going. I do not have a continuous source of income, I depend on small scale farming and casual jobs in the village to earn an income to meet other basic household needs including paying school fees for my children. At some point I could get a fundraiser from my family friends and relatives. When I received the second transfer I paid all the fees arreas. My children are no longer sent home to collect the school fees and this has improved their performance. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has given me peace of mind to do my daily activities without any stress. I am so grateful for the support."

Vincent
received a $511 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have access to clean water at my doorstep. Due to this, I no longer have to walk for long distance looking for water for domestic use. Having water at my convenience has not only enabled me to save the time I would otherwise use in going to the river but also maintain my house clean and saved me from the shame of being seen with women at the river fetching water."

Mercy
received a $511 initial payment.
"I spent KES 20000 from my transfer to pay school fees for my children. We settled on this so that they would not be sent back home due to huge fee arrears. Also, I spent around KES 18000 to buy some building materials to use in building a kitchen for my family and paid for the labor. We decided to build an iron roofed kitchen since the one we had was old and the roof was always leaking during the rainy season. I used the remaining amount to buy clothes and food for my family."

"For the past 3 years I have never had a house to call my own. This was after mine collapsed and I have never been able to build another. I don't have the capacity to as I depend on casual jobs such as burning charcoal, harvesting aloe Vera gel and sisal reeds. My spouse has been away for years due to some strange illness thus making me the sole bread winner. I am forced to find shelter in mother in law's house together with my 2 children. Receiving this money therefore means restoration of my dignity as I will be able to construct a new house."

"Financial constraint is my biggest hardship. I attribute this to my meagre earnings due to lack of a productive income generating activity. It is what makes me lead a very difficult life as I cannot comfortably meet my basic needs. It is normal for me to skip meals and achieving a decent life is like a fairy tale."

"I am happy even though I have been strongly threaten by the rumours that we are to stop islam for christianity after joining the program.
Honestly as you can see all our clan except me have not joined the program because of such rumours. Thankfully I came to the Baraza and some questions were cleared. But my friends here did not go and I don't think they will even join.
As of me I will give it a try and see."
