"Receiving this money means building a permanent house for me. I have four children and we are all living in a one bedroom grass thutched house. The house is not spacious and there is no privacy. I want to build a two bedroom house and it will cost approximately Ksh.50000 . I will use Ksh. 40000 to buy a second hand motorcycle so that I can use it for my business of taking charcoals to the market. I will use the remaining amount to buy one cow as investment."

"My husband is a casual labourer. One day I wanted to go look for job so that I can bring food to the table also. He did not allow me because he wanted me to be just house wife. When I insisted, She beat me up and chased me away for two months. It was so hard for me to stay away from my children for such a period. That's the biggest hardship I faced in life."

"I have desired to invest in livestock because is the only way I can save my money to earn a profit when I sell them after they multiply. Therefore I intend to spend the entire amount of my first transfer to buy 2 ingenious dairy cows and 10 goats. With the send transfer, I plan to spend $300 to clear the school fees balance of my kid at Mitangani Secondary school. I will use the remaining amount to buy a new bed and mattress for my kids because they are now sleeping on the floor."

"The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is food insecurity mainly because of low rainfall in the area. It has been three years since we received ample rain. This has been the biggest stumbling block to living a decent life because most of the money my husband gets from charcoal-burning business Kshs.4,000 per month is not enough for all house hold expenses."

Jescar
received a $504 initial payment.
"When I received my transfers, I spent $ 330 to fence a piece of land that I had bought. I bought some poles, barbed wire and paid for the labor. I am planning to plant some animal feeds in a section of this land and leave the other part for my livestock to be grazing on. This will give me ample time to concentrate on my house chores, garden and other projects like poultry farming. Poultry farming has been my source of livelihood alongside dairy faming. I keep traditional breeds and I usually supply eggs to the nearest shopping centers. Since I rarely sell my chicken, this project had expanded over time and the poultry house I had, had grown smaller. This was a threat to my chicken health wise due to poor aeration and congestion and there was need of a bigger house. My transfer came in handy as I was able to spend $120 to achieve this. Using the remaining $97, I purchased some food items for my family."

Richard
received a $504 initial payment.
"Before receiving the transfers, I used to live in a one room house. I depend on casual jobs and the pay is not always enough to cater for our daily needs and this always made me live on debts. Due to this, I had not been able to save even a cent to use in the construction of a spacious house for my family. Despite shelter being one of the basic needs, my children had to always walk some distance at night looking for a place to spend their night. What made me more worried is living knowing the dangers my girls are exposed to going to sleep in my neighbors house. Currently, my heart is at peace unlike before. This is because I am almost through with the construction of a house for my family and I know that very soon, my children will be sleeping at home."

"Receiving this money would mean a better house for my family at the moment I stay in grass touched house and made of mud walls and when it rains the roof leaks, mud keep falling off making it very cold at night for my children. I also spend a lot of time repairing the walls and roofing.I will therefore spend ksh 50,000 to build a 24 iron sheet roof house for the family. The remaining amount I will buy a Dairy cow Worth ksh 40,000 and foodstuffs for the family."

"I was married to my lovely husband in the nearby village who we parted ways due to his infidelity issues. I decided to return home in the year 2001. I built my house which was then swept away by a whirlwind. With my five children, I requested my brother who lives in Mombasa to allow me stay in his house as I try to look for ways and means to construct mine. I am a charcoal seller and I also sell aloe vera. However, due to drought, my business has been really negatively affected. This has disabled my ability to build my own house as I am also obliged to look for food for my children, as well pay school fees for my two children who are now in Secondary school. Receiving this money means building myself a dignified and spacious house."

"In 2014, I fell ill and being taken to hospital I was diagnosed with a throat sore problem. I had difficulties in swallowing. It was at the same time when my husband was also sick. Having young children at the moment who could not be involved in decision making of the family, I was abandoned and all focus on medication was put to my husband. I felt like unwanted in the family. It was the very lowest point of my life. I even thought of commiting suicide. However, after a period of six months, I was helped by a well-wisher who was told of my problem. I thank God I survived. That is the biggest hardship I ever faced in my life."

"At 73 years, I am no longer strong enough to engage in strenuous income-generating activities such as casual jobs or farming. I fully depend on my children to support my household needs. I was diagnosed with High blood pressure 3 years ago and was recommended to take healthy nutritious foods such as milk, vegetables and fruits to keep myself healthy, hence I have no source of income, which is the biggest hardship I face."
