"Receiving $450 from GiveDirectly felt like a lifeline to me. I have two children in university, and the burden of paying their school fees, rent, and upkeep is huge. I am truly thankful for GiveDirectly because I was able to use $200 to pay their school fees, which allowed them to continue with their education smoothly. This also relieved me of the worry about unpaid fees, enabling me to focus on my daily activities. I used $100 to harvest the green grams I planted using the first transfer. Since it was through the Kenya Seed Program, I am now waiting for payment, and I am hopeful that I will receive it by January, allowing me to invest more in my children's education. Lastly, I used $100 to buy a television for my children, so they can enjoy being at home and be entertained. The rest of the money went towards stocking up on food, ensuring my family had enough to eat."

"Going forward, for this year and the years to come, my immediate priority will be to lease land for farming through the Kenya Seed Program. I plan to plant maize, which will be crucial in ensuring my family is food secure. Additionally, I will generate income from selling the maize, and I plan to use the money to pay school fees for my children. I will use the next GiveDirectly transfer to make this farming plan a reality. The thought of it fills me with happiness and gratitude, knowing that it will help provide for my family's needs and support my children's education."

"GiveDirectly has done an excellent job alleviating poverty through its conditional cash program. What stood out to me the most was their integrity. They do not ask for bribes, and they are not involved in local politics, which makes their work even more admirable. This transparency and honesty have earned my trust. My recommendation is for GiveDirectly to continue with its current program, as it is effective and has made a positive impact on many people's lives, including mine."

Josephine
received a $347 second payment.
"My next goal is to complete building a proper house for my family. Currently, we live in a traditional manyatta house, which is not spacious or comfortable enough for my family’s needs. I am determined to move us into a modern house that provides better living conditions and enough space for everyone.
I plan to use the next transfer from GiveDirectly to finish the construction of this house. Achieving this goal will bring us privacy, comfort, and a sense of stability. Providing my family with a better home fills me with happiness and satisfaction. It gives me hope for a brighter future and motivates me to keep working towards improving our lives."

"My next goal for this year and beyond is to build a house for my son. The floods not only destroyed one of our houses but also left our current living arrangement crowded and uncomfortable for my household.
With the next transfer from GiveDirectly, I plan to bring this dream to life. Building this house will provide much-needed privacy and comfort for my family. It will also create a better living environment, ensuring everyone has space.
Achieving this fills me with happiness and hope for the future. I am optimistic that this step will improve our family’s quality of life and bring us lasting peace and stability."

Debra
received a $347 second payment.
"I was overjoyed when I received $450 from GiveDirectly, and I am truly grateful for their support. Recently, my family and I were affected by devastating floods, which forced us to rethink how we live and where we stay. Thankfully, I had used my first transfer to start a seasonal business selling maize. This business generated income that allowed me to purchase land in a safer location, far from the future risks of flooding.
When I received the $450, I invested the entire amount in buying construction materials to build a new house on this safer land. The house is now spacious and comfortable enough for my family.
I am deeply thankful to GiveDirectly because, without their help, we would still be vulnerable to the dangers of future floods. Now, my family and I are safer and more secure, and this peace of mind is something I will always cherish."

Masha
received a $27 eighteenth payment.
"Since I am still in school, my primary goal is to successfully complete my four years of high school and excel academically. I am focused on ensuring that by the time I graduate, I will be prepared to pursue my passion: working in the Kenya Defence Forces. Currently, I am in my third year and have already started preparing for my final exams next year. My priority is to concentrate on my studies to achieve this goal. I am deeply grateful for the support I receive, which is helping me inch closer to realizing my dream. I use my monthly transfers to pay school fees, supplemented by some help from my brother. Once I achieve this dream, I will be able to support my mother, who needs me the most as a widow, and I will finally live the life I have always envisioned with a stable and fulfilling job."

Sidi
received a $27 twenty-sixth payment.
"My primary goal right now is to build a two-room house for my family. The current house has only two small rooms, which barely accommodate my family of six. We’ve been squeezing into this space for a long time, and I feel it’s time my children have the privacy they need, especially now that they are growing up. To achieve this goal, I already have 12 iron sheets, but I need at least 20 to complete the construction. I plan to purchase the remaining materials using funds from my upcoming transfers, savings from the small business I run, and additional support from my husband. I believe that once this dream becomes a reality, it will bring my family the comfort and happiness we’ve been missing for so long. As a mother, completing this house will not only restore my dignity but also bring me a sense of fulfillment that has eluded me for years."

"My biggest challenge currently is a lack of money. I have three children of whom I'm paying fees for and since my wife passed on I have been left with the burden of providing for them. It's challenging for me since I depend on being hired as a driver which is not enough to cater for my household needs and also my children's school fees. This has left me so stressed and worried for the future of my children."

"Prolonged period of drought is the biggest hurdle we are currently facing. I am a livestock farmer and it is our major source of livelihood yet we receive minimal rainfall in our region. Animal feeds has become scarce and moreover, this has brought about the ripple effect and getting school fees and cash for domestic use is now an uphill task. I, therefore, intend to spend my first transfer on clearing school fees arrears and do away with the fears that has built in my life. This is the corner stone in realizing a fulfilled life as a parent and I am glad that I will be among the beneficiaries of GiveDirectly."
