"We are happy when GiveDirectly visits us for follow-up. I am also happy because the transfer comes directly to us and it does not pass through leaders such as chiefs and subchiefs."

Saumu
received a $435 second payment.
"Before the transfer, I had a grocery shop where I sold vegetables such as pigweed, tomatoes, onions, and okra. Right now, I am at home taking care of my grandchild. My daughter has a son and when she was called for a job in the city she opted to leave her son behind until she can be able to settle down. I have eight children, two are in school, and six are over the age of eighteen. One child is in primary school and the other one is in high school. The one in high school pays $60 a term which has been a challenge and over the years I had accumulated $220 in debt. GiveDirectly money has enabled me to pay off the debts and even paid some $100 in advance for two terms. The rest of the transfer was spent on food. I can now concentrate on just paying school fees for my other children without straining myself."

Christine
received a $450 second payment.
"I bought a cow worth kshs 15,000. This is because all my 4 children really love milk. So I prefer to have the cow than to be buy milk. Incase of excess milk, I can also sell some. My 2 children had a school fees balance of kshs 10,000 and so, I cleared it. My house needed repair. I bought 7 bags of cement @ kshs 700. I bought sand worth kshs 2,000 ,floor tiles worth kshs 3,400 and paid kshs 3,000 for labour. My husband is a casual worker and recently he has not been lucky to be called for any job. So I was the one buying food mostly but in small portions. I would buy maize flour, vegetables and water using this money. Approximately, I spent kshs 16,800 on food."

"I want to continue educating my six children until they finish school. I will be able to achieve this by saving little by little from my daily income. I would also request GiveDirectly for an additional transfer since I still have a long way to go with my family. An additional transfer will give me a big boost."

"I am happy because of receiving these transfers and I thank God for the same. Since I started receiving these transfers, my life changed for the best. The help you gave me was so great. I thank you so much for this I don’t take it for granted. Many people spent money on basic needs like food, shelter, and education but I spent it very differently and I believe it is going to make a difference in my life"
