Fatuma
received a $519 second payment.
"Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I was hiring oxen to plough my farm during the planting season and paying for this service was costly. However, my life is now different in that I now have my own pair of oxen for ploughing my farm. I am no longer hiring from anyone. I had also acquired a plot of land and my plan was to build a rental house, but I had not yet completed the payment. It's only through this transfer that I was able to clear the cost, and I am now in full possession of the plot. Soon I will be purchasing building materials to begin the construction. This is an investment which I will be earning a good income."

received a $519 second payment.
"The coming of GiveDirectly to me was the biggest miracle because I never imagined of a day that I would own a cow and goats. If I was to buy them at my own cost, then I wouldn't be having any. Owning livestock to me is the biggest achievement I can speak of because once this cow and goats reproduce, then I will be able to sell the offsprings and earn some money. Thus having these living assets to me is a form of saving for the future. I also have a solar panel that I acquired through this money. I was previously using lamps which consumed a lot of fuel, which means that I had to incur costs in buying kerosene. With the solar panel, lighting is adequate thus relieving me the cost of buying kerosene. Now I can comfortably charge my phone and neighbors phones at a fee, I do not have to depend on electricity since accessing it in our area is costly, thus having the solar is the best alternative source of energy to me."

"My expectation in the near future is to start and run a successful cosmetic business. It has always been my desire to run my own business-specifically a beauty and cosmetic business. This business apart from being a source of employment to myself and probably two other people, It would also be a source of income for my family. This will allow us to improve our lifestyle by being financially stable, I will be in a position to take my children to good schools."

Kennedy
received a $39 eleventh payment.
"I had plans of setting up a new shop business alongside the maize roasting business that I am currently running, but I got an accident months ago where my house burnt down with all my belongings. This derailed my plans because I now have to focus on buying new household items as well as other personal requirements. I still have the plan to set the business in mind, but I know it will take a while before I can achieve it because the business I currently run does not earn me much."

"Since my son is almost completing his schooling, I would have time to save my next transfers and spend to buy food in bulk for the family. This would take us for some few weeks which would also give me time to rest and save part of the money which I earn from casual jobs."

"My expectation in the near future is to be in a position to help improve our home. My parents are working hard to pay for my siblings and my school fees. this forces them sometimes to forego some of the things that they may require. I want to be an a position where I can help my parents meet some of the household requirements so that they do not have to really struggle. I hope for a better future and thanks to GiveDirectly for being part of the journey."

Margaret
received a $537 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a heifer. I used to buy milk from my neighbors and it is very costly for me. I depend on the manual jobs in the village to earn an income to meet basic needs of my family and also pay school fees for my children. I could not get any extra income to buy a dairy cow. Currently, I have a heifer and this has given me hope that I will get enough milk in the next few months when the cow reproduces. I will also be in a position to sell the surplus milk to earn an income to meet other additional needs for my family and pay school fees for my children. I am so much grateful because GiveDirectly has brought hope for us. I did not know that one day I will own a dairy cow."

Chelangat
received a $537 initial payment.
"My life is currently different from how it was before because I now own two heifers. With this, I believe that my children will have a quality education that I was not able to get. The two heifers are assets to me that I will depend on educating my children. I will be using the income from milk sales to achieve this. Also, my family will always have milk for consumption and I will no longer be buying them anymore."
