"The biggest difference in my life today is that I was able to pay for my son's school fees arrears without selling any of our properties, I am at peace and relieved because I don't have any arrears. In addition to that my children have a decent place to sleep on, I was unable to do all this due to financial constraints, GiveDirectly has lifted our living standard, it has restored the hope to thrive on in life and we are grateful for the support"

"Receiving this money means owning livestock. I am an old woman in a polygamous family with a family of six children who depends on me for their survival. Five of these children are currently in primary school. Raising their school fees has really been a challenge following the long periods of drought that has made it difficult for me to engage in subsistence farming like before. However, life has to move on. The only economic activity is to burn charcoal for Sale. Charcoal burning has been the only means for survival and now there are no more trees for charcoal burning. The only thing is to dig the tree trunks to burn. It takes long to get a sack of charcoal which goes at 350 KES. In a month I can only make a profit of 3500 KES which is not enough to meet the basic needs of my family. My ambition has been to keep goats that I will sell when they multiply and pay school fees for my children. Upon receiving the cash transfer, I will buy ten goats that will cost me 30000 KES. I will then use the remaining amount of money to pay school fees and meet other basic needs."

"Lack of enough money and poor health of my mother are the main challenges that I am facing currently. Imagine being an illiterate woman, jobless and the only breadwinner to a family of four. This really gives me sleepless nights. I depend on charcoal burning business that is not reliable because the much profit I can make in a month is 3000 KES. This money is solely used for food, school fees for my sister's children and some to pay for medication for my sick mother. Upon receiving the cash transfer, I will be able to buy ten goats that will cost me 30000 KES, pay school fees for the two children and pay the medical bill for my mother in hospital."

"As someone who is not married in a village of few opportunities, I do not earn enough to make sure my family is well fed. Sometimes I go more than two days without food and I feel sorry for the children since an adult can be well. The children too also suffer from variety of diseases especially malaria and this drains me the money meant for food because I have to take them to the hospital. In the end, I rarely save any money to do other activities."

"Receiving this money means good health to my son. I have one child who is one year and three months old. He was diagnosed with asthma in early April, a condition that has really affected his health to a point of losing 2kg of his weight. As a family, me and my wife, we have been doing everything to make sure he get the best treatment. But all this has been a challenge since I solely depend on my small charcoal business to provide for every expense. Therefore, this money will ensure my son first get best treatment and then other expenses can follow."
