"My father-in-law bought land in the neighborhood and asked my family to move out of our ancestral land and settle there. The ancestral land is largely fertile but the other one is covered with rocks and hence nothing grows on it. I am a farmer but sadly I cannot practice it here since my farm cannot support it. I desire to start poultry farming because I feel that is the only thing that can be viable here. My husband works as a painter where he earns KES 300-450 per day when he is lucky to get a painting job. This money caters for food such as milk, vegetables and maize flour leaving us with nothing to save for the poultry project. I intend to spend KES 40,000 to buy 50 chicken and also construct a modern chicken structure. I will then start collecting eggs and selling them for KES 15 each and stop depending on my husband. Receiving this money will help me start a poultry business and this will be an additional source of income for my family."

"Receiving this money means an increase in our savings. I am a housewife and my husband is a casual laborer in the village earning an approximate wage of KES 150 a day. Due to the huge recurrent expenditures of the household and school expenses, we have been unable to save enough money. We spend a lot of cash to purchase milk which is KES 75 a day. We intend to reduce spending on milk by purchasing a dairy cow which costs approximately KES 30,000 from the first transfer. I am glad that soon we will be able to own one using the transfer from Give Directly."

"Receiving this money will relate to independence in my life. I am a single mother of 5 living on my parents' 0.05 acres of land. The land is too small to raise my 5 children yet I do not have ownership of it. I have been aspiring to acquire a bigger one but I could not own it due to inadequacy of funds. At an estimated cost of KES 70,000 from first the transfer, I intend to purchase 0.1 acres of land and lead a better life. I will be able to do my developments on it unlike now when I cannot even construct a poultry house because I do not own it. I feel elated that I have been enrolled in this program because I will be able to own land."

"I used to depend on my grandmother for upkeep before she succumbed to a sudden illness in January 2022. Thereafter, I have been depending on good wishers to support my family of 2 and since I am a grown-up and energetic person, I wish to fend for myself fully. I intend to utilise KES 30000 to put up a second-hand clothes business at Chebunyo Centre hence using the profits to pay for my college fees as well as raise my family. I will be glad that I will be able to stand by myself therefore not bothering my relatives for upkeep."

"In my village, the climatic conditions have been unfavourable for crop production hence limiting our food availability. I resorted to opening a clinic to get a supplement to agriculture consequently, sustain my family of 3. It is so depressing that the profits I earn from this business all cater to the household necessities and I have almost nothing to save."

"I used all of my recent transfer to revive my shop keeping business and posho mill business. These are businesses that had stalled due to lack of capital on our end and we are grateful that they are now picking up. I currently earn at least KES 300 from the business that I run and I cant be more grateful to GiveDirectly for bettering our living standards."

"I spent KES 21,000 on purchasing a water tank for storing clean water for domestic uses. This is because I used to walk for a long distance to collect clean water. This was so tiresome and time-consuming. I had always wished to own a water tank but I did not have the money. Currently, I have enough water for domestic uses and I have saved time to do my other chores and home. I bought some buildings materials and build a better and more spacious house for the family. We used to live in a small house that could not host all my family members comfortably. Currently, I have a decent and spacious house and I feel so happy and grateful since this was one of my biggest dream fulfilled. I paid KES 6,000 school fees for my two children in secondary school. KES 3,000 each. They were able to study well without being disturbed. I hope to see a better performance this term. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened on time."
