"I spent my second transfer to buy goats and cows, to purchase mattresses for myself and my children and to pay school fees. I bought goats and cows because I hope they can procreate and generate wealth for me in future. I can also get produce for sale such as milk or meat from these livestock, or I can sell the animals in case of any emergency that I come across in future. I bought mattresses because my children and I used to sleep on old and tattered mattresses. I was employed as a motorbike rider before and I only made enough money to sustain my household's most important needs such as meals or school fees. My wife cooks and sells local delicacies known as 'chapati' and 'mandazi'. We did not make enough money to afford us the luxury to buy better mattresses. I am grateful that we now have new and comfortable mattresses on our beds."

"In the next four months, I want to save more money to be able to increase the family's assets. I want to focus on saving the monthly transfers that I get, combine the same with proceeds from my tea farming and buy a highly productive dairy cow. We are currently buying milk from our neighbor which is very costly and humiliating as well. Buying a dairy cow will bring an end to the constant shortage of milk that we have always experienced as a family. The dairy cow shall also be of great importance to me and to my entire family now and in the future."

"I used my transfer to buy water pipes. I have been walking for a long distance to fetch water for household and livestock use. I used my transfer to buy water pipes and I am now happy since I no longer walk for a long distance as I have tap water at my homestead. I also used part of my transfer to buy a dairy cow. I have been buying milk for many years and this was very expensive as I was depending on my spouse who works as a security guard. I also bought two bags of maize for my family since I have been buying maize flour and at times we could have little food to eat when my husband did not have money."

I also own pan for cooking chapati as a result, I do not need to ask for any from a neighbour."

"The biggest difference in my daily life in the last four months preceding the current transfer is buying livestock. I managed to buy two sheep, a cow and goat using the money I received from GiveDirectly. I will be keeping them as my investment to multiply and add value. I will get their waste to use as organic manure in my farm. My cow will also be providing me with milk that can drink as well as sell to earn some income."

"I spent my second transfer to purchase a bed and mattress, and also to purchase two goats and a cow. I bought these livestock with the hope that they will procreate and generate wealth for me in future. Once they procreate, I can sell either for them in case of an emergency in future. I also lacked a bed. I used to sleep on a mat on the floor. I now have a comfortable bed and a mattress, and I also bought my wife a bed and a mattress. "I spent my second transfer to purchase two cows and a bed. I did not have a bed. I used to lay on storage sacks that I would spread on the floor. I slept like this for many years. I used the transfers to purchase a bed and a mattress and I now sleep comfortably on a bed. I also bought cattle that will assist me to plough my land and also bring me income when I sell milk that the cow will produce. I do casual jobs in my village and my wife burns charcoal for a living. We both earn very little that is never always enough to sustain us. I was really happy with Give Directly. My life is changed completely."
