received a $26 initial payment.
"Erick, my son, was born two days before the transfer. My top priority at the time was getting enough clothing for my child and re-energizing my body after childbirth. However, the money my husband had set aside for these purposes was insufficient; his motorcycle job had not paid well that week. This is why I spent KES 2,000 from the transfer to buy my son a pair of onesies and a baby blanket. I bought porridge flour for myself with KES 500. I am relieved that my energy has returned, and the baby is doing well as a result of the transfer. In addition, I purchased two hens with the remaining funds, as I had planned when I was enrolled into the cash program."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that my kids are learning without any interruption. This has restored the joy in my life. Previously, I was extremely bothered seeing the skipping classes because of lack of school fees. In addition, I am happy that I was able to boost my poultry farming something that will be able to caution me whenever I experience a financial emergency."

Kenga
received a $26 second payment.
"I have been running a business selling charcoal although this has proven expensive in terms of trans[porting this product. To boost this business, I had opted to join and save KES 2,000 on a merry-go-round every month. I intend to use the whole amount at the end of this year. I shall be saving intending to raise capital of running a business. With this, I shall be able to acquire a motorcycle to aid my movement as I do a business selling charcoal. The rest I spent on paying school fees for my 7 children. They are in primary school though I have been struggling to raise fees. However, courtesy of the transfer, they have been able to continue with their studies."

Rehema
received a $465 initial payment.
"I am grateful to GiveDirectly because the transfer has helped me to acquire a second-hand motorcycle which has now become the main source of income for my household. I employed someone to provide taxi services at a fee hence bringing an income daily. Through the income, I am able to buy daily food for my family and also pay fees. Apart from this, I normally sell vegetables in our weekly market and I am happy that I do not pay transport costs anymore while ferrying my items. The motorcycle has also greatly helped me in carrying water from far places since we have been hit by a serious water shortage. The bike helps otherwise I would be buying or walking to those places to carry the water."

"I had been looking forward to the transfers in order to help relieve my family's hunger. In fact, I woke up that morning starving because I had not eaten anything the night before. Working as a motorcycle rider, I was yet to earn enough money to buy food. I felt a weight lift off my shoulders when I finally got the transfer. I was certain that the family would be fed."

Emily
received a $465 initial payment.
"For over two years now, I had failed to own a bed abd mattress because I could not afford it which led to me and my husband to sleep on the ground. Immediately I withdrew the transfer, I went ahead and purchased a bed accompanied with a mattress which cost me KES 12,000. Also some few years back I studied tailoring, but afterwards since I did not have the machine I was never able to make a living our of it. Lucky for me though, I ended up using KES 17,000 and ensured that I bought a tailoring machine that finally allowed me to sew. I also bought clothes for my child and myself which cost KES 6,000. Apart from that, I also bought two goats that cost me KES 7,000 because I intended on having more livestock and lastly I used the rest of the money and looked into nutrition for myself and my family."

Kalu
received a $465 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is purchasing building materials to build a better and more spacious house. We live in a small grass thatched house that cannot host all my family members comfortably. We are being exposed to colds and this is so risky to our health. I have always wished to build a better and more spacious house but I did not have the money. I am a motorcycle taxi operator the amount of money that I could get from this job is so small and I was not in a position to save some money. The money I would get was only enough for basic household needs and food for my children. Currently, I have purchased all the necessary materials and the construction is ongoing. I am so grateful because we will move into a spacious house, We will not be exposed to cold again. My children will sleep comfortably and have room to do their studies well. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to fulfill my dream of owning a good house."
