"My goal for the year is to start an animal farming project. I have four goats which I had through GD. I had bought six, but two died due to the drought we have been facing. I was hoping to grow my flock to sixty goats, which is still a hope I have. I want to be able to take care of my finaces whenever work is slow. I have a roadside video shop where I show football matches. I get a lot of work on weekends and during big games, this however is very seasonal. When there are no games I can sell a goat and buy food for the family or get medicine."

"I was a tailor who would make her earnings from making and repairing clothes, but since last year I have stopped this business. I have had chest issues that affect my eyes too, and sometimes I cannot see. I require medication monthly to manage the disease. I have been cooking food and selling to try and make ends meet, but it has been an uphill task. I spent $10 from my February transfers to by my medicine. I also have a child in school. I used $5 and $4 from my January and March transfers to pay her school fees. I also saved in January, February and March and bought a sheep. Being that the drought is still persistent, I used $10,$14, $20 from my last three months transfers to sort out food."

"Since I live in a makeshift house, I plan to complete my 2-roomed house. It's my priority. I will spend $200. This means when my daughters visit they'll have a good place to call home. Goats have supported me for long. I need to upgrade the breed I have now. To do this I will buy an additional 15 goats, to the 20 I have. It will cost me $700. When they grow, I can sell them and support my children's education an other needs such as food and clothes. It also means I won't have to worry too much on where to get money. The remaining transfer will be used for daily support. That's to buy food, buy medicine for my goats when they're sick and other emergencies. The transfer will help me buy food for at least 3 months."

"When I received the recent cash, most of my children and I were suffering from a flu infection and needed medical attention. Since the illness had made me not work on my charcoal-selling business I could not afford the medication by myself. Gladly, I was able to spend $10 on acquiring the medicine. Also, the household had run out of food, and I spent the remaining $24 on maize flour. Am grateful that we are recovering well from the flu and that my family still has enough meals to date. In February, every penny went towards food, and in  January, most of the transfer, $20, went towards purchasing school uniforms for my son who was set to join junior secondary school. "

"What a great relief to me to have received GiveDirectly to my home! Over the last 7 years, I have been seeking refuge from my son's house because he mostly stays away from home. This has been a period of shifting to my kitchen when they visit us with his wife. Culturally, this is not allowed and I have always felt breaking our "Giriama" norms. Since I have desired to have a separate house, I am now a happy person to be part of the potential beneficiaries. The money will help me to construct a 1-roomed iron-roofed house for myself, which will restore the dignity that I have lost for a long time. This project will cost me utmost $600. The remaining amount will help me to buy food and medicine. Thus, this is generally what receiving this money means to me."

"My youngest son, who works at a few old part-time jobs, helps me financially because I am very old and need him to make ends meet. With the temperature rising due to climate change, life in the village has become intolerable. My son, who raises livestock for a living, makes only $30 per month and is unable to support both his own family and mine. I used $14 of my January transfers to purchase food and medicine. My son, who struggles to make sure I get all the necessities, was greatly relieved by this. I frequently get sick, and instead of going to the hospital for proper care, I am forced to use medicinal herbs to treat my illness. I'm appreciative that my monthly stipend always goes a long way toward assisting me in taking care of my needs. Along with purchasing food and medication, I saved the remaining $20 in a group of five people. After making monthly contributions of $20 each, two people receive $60 each. With this sum, one can make appropriate plans and complete larger projects that cost a lot of money."

"Since childhood, I have been passionate about doing a course in medicine. However, when things got tough for my parents, I felt like giving up, especially when I witnessed my brother dropping out of school at form three. Fortunately, I gained hope when I first received my transfer from GiveDirectly's program. I now long to study nursing when I secure a chance at the university. Therefore, with the assurance of the monthly transfer, I shall use my monthly transfers to pay off my school fees. As a result, I am cocksure of completing my O'level of study and joining the university."

"I was really ill by the time I received the second transfer. I am happy that the transfer allowed me to seek medical attention. Because I couldn't afford medicine, I was merely lying in bed at home when it helped me. Although I am unable to accurately estimate the cost of the treatment, I can be proud that GiveDirectly's transfer allowed me to recover. After that, I spent $35 on a goat and used the rest of the money for food."

"Immediately after I received my transfer, I prioritized buying maize flour. I, therefore, spent $10 on food because my family had run out of food. As a result, we feel slightly relieved from the severe famine that is currently sweeping our region. I am glad the food will last my family for some days. In addition, I have saved $15 for my land preparation in anticipation of the next planting season. Previously, we never had sufficient rain translating to the current hardship we face. Lastly, I have planned to use the remaining cash for my medication since I suffer from a chronic condition. With the past three months' transfers, I could easily acquire food and buy medicine. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the financial support."
