"Before GiveDirectly came to my village, I used to live in a one-room grass thatched house. This is now in the past as I have been able to build a bigger iron sheet-roofed house. This so far makes my daily life different from how it was before."

"I had an old leaking grass thatch house and whenever it rained we had to store our households in a corner so that they couldn't be ruined by the rain. At the same time, the house had cracks on the wall which was so risky and I feared it could fall on us at any time and harm us. When I received the first transfer I bought building materials which I have already used to construct a big iron roof house. Aside from that, I bought bedding to replace the old worn out bedding which was uncomfortable sleeping on."

"I spent my transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets and timber which I used in putting up a new house. The one I have been living in is a grass thatched house and it has not been comfortable because it has a leaking roof. Since farming is my only source of income, I was not able to buy building materials on my own. I also bought new bedding with part of the transfer because the one I have been spending on were old and my blanket was torn causing me sleepless nights. The remaining part of the transfer I used in buying food for my family since we did not have enough in the house. I feared soon enough we might start skipping meals as it was the case before I received this transfer."

"As a subsistence farmer, I have always desired to plough a big piece of land to curb food shortage. However, this is not possible due to lack of money to hire oxen. I only plough one acre which only produces food to last us a month. With this transfer, I will purchase oxen that I will use to till four acres of land. This will mean more produce thus reducing food insecurity. Besides using them in my farm, I will also hire them to my neighbours to generate some income. I will also invest more in my poultry business which I have been doing, but it is not so productive due to lack of enough capital. With these two income generating activities, I will be able to educate my children and give them a bright future. I will also replace my grass roof with iron sheets in order to cut down the cost of buying grass every four months."

"I spent my first transfer to purchase building materials to build a house for my sons who had attained the age of majority and could not be allowed by the customary law to sleep under one roof with me, the parent. The struggle that they went through after their house collapsed due to heavy rains could not allow me not to acquire them another house. Besides that, I also purchased six goats for rearing until they acquire enough weight to fetch tangible money when sold. This will help meet the school fee need for my children in the future. I also bought an ox- plough for my oxen since I didn't have before which left me with a hard task and shame of frequent borrowing from the neighbour. I am happy that I will nolonger undergo this struggle."

"The biggest difference since I started receiving this transfer is that I now have a bigger, better and iron roofed house. Prior to receiving this transfer, I have been living in a grass thatched house with a leaking roof. As a result, I have always felt life is unfair because I have tried going for casual work and doing other odd jobs in the village to raise money to buy building materials, but it has not been possible. The little income I have always received has not even been enough for feeding my family leave alone paying school fees for my children. When I received this transfer, I thought of nothing else but a new house which I have been talking about with my wife for a year. The following morning after receiving the money, I went and bought building materials so that I could not get distracted again. I really thank GD for their financial. GD is the reason I have a new house which I could not build on my own."

"We have been living in an incomplete structure which we started building some two years ago. Completing the construction of the roof and the floor have been a problem since we have never gotten enough money. We have been struggling to settle the payment of the school fees which have been taking most of our money and receiving the transfers from GiveDirectly means completion and settling in a complete house."

"I did spend my very first transfer to build a new house. Initially, I lived in a small house that had cracked walls and was almost falling down, the roof was rusted and could leak whenever it rained. That is the reason as to why I did spend my initial transfer to build a better and spacious house. The remaining amount after the construction of the house I started a fish business to help meet my daily household needs."

"My life is different in that, I have developed in my home. I sleep well in my permanent structure and I eat well (healthy ) compared to before when I used to sleep under a leaking roof. I could not have built my permanent structure if I never received the transfer."

"My life is different than it would have been because I am happy to have built an iron sheet roofed house, bought a bicycle, a solar panel for lighting at night, which I couldn't afford before. "
