Lawrence
received a $443 second payment.
"I used KES 29000 to buy a dairy cow and used another KES 18000 to pay school fees for my daughter who is in form three while the remaining amount was used to buy clothes for my children. Had I not received money from GiveDirectly I would not have paid the school fees in full yet. This is because I rely on motorcycle hustle to raise such money which would ha e taken me longer to accumulate just enough. I feel so much indebted to givedirectly fir the support. It has brought so much joy to our family as a whole."

received a $10 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life since I received the transfers is the ease of paying examination fees for my children. This would not have been possible with the help of the transfers. I do operate a motorcycle taxi once in a while whenever I am lucky to get one from a friend but it was unfortunate that for two weeks I had not got a chance. Being the breadwinner of the family, it was not easy to sustain the family needs and raise the examination fees at the same time. I am glad GiveDirectly came to my rescue and the children managed to sit for their examinations."

Umazi
received a $10 initial payment.
"I am a subsistence farmer, and I earn a living by farming. For three years, we have battled a serious drought, making it impossible to grow crops on the farm. I lost my source of income and now depend fully on my husband who is a motorcycle taxi “Boda Boda”. His job has seriously been affected by the rise in fuel, making him lose customers who prefer cheaper public transport. This makes him earn very little (KES 300 per day) compared to the beginning of the year (KES 1000 per day). The big difference in his income is a challenge towards providing fully for the family. When I received my first transfer, I spent it all on buying food. I bought three packets of maize flour at KES 600, 2 kg of beans at KES 240, a packet of tea leaves, and ½ kg of sugar at KES 150."

Andrew
received a $458 second payment.
"GiveDirectly enabled me to accomplish most of the goals which I had before I got the transfers. At the moment, I got a piece of land, a good house, a cow, and three sheep. All these were as a result of the transfer which I got, I am glad that I am now set to start my own family very soon. I operate a motorcycle taxi business and the market is flooded at the market and income from the business isn't reliable anymore. My new goal is to start up a retail business so that I would earn profits that would enable me to provide for my family in the few months to come."

Zainabu
received a $443 second payment.
"Since I had used part of my first transfer to purchase a parcel of land and had not cleared the remaining balance, therefore, with the first transfer I spent KES 30000 amount from my second transfer to clear it up. Currently, I am still living in my father's compound however , my wish hope and prayers is to have my own home and soon I will be establishing my home now that I have a parcel of land. Besides, KES 20000 amount obtained from my second transfer went into purchasing a motorcycle. As single parent with four children to take care of, I have been using the motorcycle to ferry clients at fee and from this my family have been meeting their basic needs. I am impressed that the remaining cash transfer went into purchasing food for my family. Indeed I am impressed and grateful to GiveDirectly. home where I was born"

Karisa
received a $25 sixth payment.
"We are three people in my family, and I am the breadwinner. I operate a motorcycle taxi business which has been sustaining our needs. This being the only source of income, it has been challenging to raise money for investing in other projects to improve our household income. Therefore, for the past three months, I have used KES 6000 to purchase foodstuffs for my household. This has enabled me to save some money from my business. KES 3000 I used to purchase a goat to rear for business purposes. I am thankful for the support because it has relieved me of the financial burden and at least I can currently have some savings."

Changawa
received a $25 initial payment.
"I took a motorbike on loan last year and I was required to pay KES 2,000 a week for over a year and a half to clear the debt. I used the motorcycle as my means of survival as I got paid a fee every time to transport passengers and goods. Therefore when I received this recent transfers I decided to finally settle the debt and I paid KES 700. Afterwards I took KES 1,900 and bought a couple of spare parts for the motorcycle. As for what I was left with which was KES 400 I left it in my savings account in case of a rainy day."

Kadii
received a $458 initial payment.
"For years I have been raising my six children singlehandedly since my spouse is old and jobless. It has however been tough considering that I depended on casual jobs. I used to earn KES 150 in a day which was not enough even for our daily meals. Therefore paying the fees for my five children who are in primary school used to be the biggest challenge. They used to miss exams and were sometimes forced to repeat the same grade. This has been demoralizing them and as their mother, it used to stress me a lot. Therefore after receiving the cash I had to think of a permanent solution to this problem. Having the goats, therefore, is an assurance that my kids will be able to go to school without any hiccups. This is because whenever I will be required to pay fees, I will be in a position to sell one or two goats and settle the arrears. This is an assurance that my kids will be better people in future to eradicate extreme poverty life."
