"I spent some part of the transfer that I received on some building materials such as iron sheet, poles, timber and nails. I am planning to build a new and improved house. We are currently living in one mud-walled and grassed thatched roof house which is used as both the bedroom, sitting room and a place where our visitors stay. This is sometimes so inconveniencing for us when we have visitors and there is less privacy. This makes us really uncomfortable as a family. I am also planning to buy seats and other household items once the house is completed with the remaining amount of the transfer. Food availability for us as a family has really improved since I was able to buy some stock of food that will last us for a while."

"I used to live in a small grass-thatched house that would leak during the rainy seasons before receiving money from GD. The house itself was in a very dilapidated state and was quite an embarrassment to me considering that there were only a few of us living in such kind of houses in our village. I had already started saving for a new house but it was taking too long because of my low income. With the money, I was able to construct a much larger iron-roofed house which took away the biggest problem in life a the time."

"I built a small house for my son who had nowhere to sleep thereby forcing him to share a roof with his grandmother which was already proving to be a very uncomfortable thing for him. I am now happy that he has his own house where he has his own privacy."

"I have been slowly but surely buying new iron sheets every month when I receive the cash transfers from GD. I want to use the materials to build a new house for my kids who have now become of age and it no longer feels comfortable for them to share the same roof with me at night. My biggest worry currently is that the kids have been spending their nights in different places every night and personally am not for the idea because anything can happen to them when they are away."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is to build a new kitchen. I used to have a kitchen but its roof was blown away by the wind sometimes. This forced me to be cooking in the open air within my compound. I would experience difficulties in cooking in rainy and windy days and sometimes would end up not cooking at well when the conditions were too harsh. I am happy I can now cook with much comfort in my new kitchen."

"The biggest difference in my daily life preceding the current transfer is renovating my house. It had damages on the roof which made it to leak during rainy days. I also plastered the floor and walls of my house. This has eased my wife the burden of periodical smearing as a way of maintaining it. Cleaning has also been made easier and quicker."

"My life has improved greatly since I started receiving transfers from Give Directly. We used to live in a grass thatched house that was not so decent. The roof used to leak during the rainy season. The walls were in bad condition and had to be repaired more often. But now we live in a very good semipermanent house. The roof is also covered with the iron sheet. The old house is currently used as a kitchen which also serves as a bedroom to my teenage daughter. She no longer sleeps at my neighbour's house. This used to bother me because walking at night was not safe especially for a young girl like her."
