Amani
received a $25 sixth payment.
"My husband recently bought a motorcycle on credit which has become our main household income. He pays KES 2700 weekly to service the debt and thus the unstable household income. We have four children, two are in primary school and the other two have not joined yet. Sometimes we struggle to meet our household needs and this has resulted in both school fees arrears for our children and poor sleeping conditions. With the last three months’ transfers, I paid KES 4000 to clear the school fees arrears and saved KES 1500 that I will add to the next transfer and purchase a mattress. I also bought a sheep worth KES 3500 to rear for business purposes."

Reuben
received a $10 initial payment.
"I had received a call a day before the transfer from a credit company that sold me a motorcycle on credit warning me to service the credit on time, or they would confiscate it. This got me worried because I had spent on it and besides, it is my main source of income. Luckily, GiveDirectly came to my rescue. The transfer was a lifesaver!! I was excited by the news and immediately paid for the credit."

Moses
received a $10 initial payment.
"I am a motorcycle taxi driver and casual laborer. I have a family of seven; my wife, five children, and I. Four of my kids are school-going while one has not yet started schooling because he is still very young. GiveDirectly transfer was a big boost because it enabled me to buy food worth KES 600 and pay part of my kids’ school fees. I had fee arrears of KES 2500 and was not in a position to even settle part of it due to lack of money. Repaying part of the fee arrears helped reduce my financial burdens making me to have peace of mind. I thank GiveDirectly for the support."

Lucy
received a $442 second payment.
"Since I got married 8 years ago, we have been living in a small one-roomed temporary house with my family of 4 members. It was such small to accommodate two beds and our household properties. Additionally, we were using it as a kitchen at the same time. I spent all of my second transfer continuing with the construction of a two-bedroom house that I had started with the first house. I bought 40 bags of cement, iron rod and paid the construction cost. At the moment, we are grateful for the progress that we have made, so far we are about to put up the roof."

"My new goal is to start a different business of cereal selling. When I received my first transfer, I bought a motorcycle that I have been using to look for income that helps me feed my family and meet other needs of my family as well. The business is not bad although it comes with it's fair share of challenges and it is for this reason that i am thinking about starting a small cereal selling business that will allow me make more income and support my family. My intention is to save up enough money to be able to start this business as soon as possible."

Robert
received a $442 second payment.
"My new goal is to start a business of my own. I am thinking about opening a general shop within the village or in a nearby centre called Chebunyo. The goal is to make sure that I am able to vend for myself and my siblings comfortably. Before GiveDirectly came I was working as a casual in a nearby town but when we received the money I resorted to staying at home as I take care of my family. Currently I do motorcycle riding where ewe get money to buy food and other basic household needs. The plan is to save up enough money through this hustle and start a general shop where I will be selling basic household commodities such as food."

"GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the people in the community to improve their standard of living. Most of the people have built better and decent houses and some have started a small businesses and are doing well. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well."
