"At the beginning of the year I decided to purchase a bike on loan with the agreement that I would settle the debt gradually as time went by. I currently use this motorcycle as a way of earning money where I transport goods and people for a certain fee but I still have a debt. Therefore when I received this money I ended up using KES 500 to settle a part of the debt. I proceeded to use another KES 500 to pay for my daughters tuition because a day before receiving the money she had been sent home. As for what remained which was a balance of KES 2,000 I decided to buy eight packets of maize flour, cooking oil, groceries and salt as well because having a meal was challenging at times." "I spent $10 on paying school fees for my son in high school. He is now studying well without being sent home like before. This was affecting his performance since he would miss some of the lessons. I am a motorcycle taxi operator. The money that I get from this work is so small and it is only for basic household needs I was not able to pay all the school fees on time. Besides that, I paid $10 as an installment for the motorcycle since I bought it on higher purchase. I wish to continue paying the balance and own the motorcycle fully. I spent the remaining amount of money on food and basic household items for the family. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has enabled us to educate our children." "I used $14 to pay school fees for my children who are still in their primary level of studies and used another $6 to buy chicken for keeping. The remaining amount of $10 was used to buy food for my family. I am a father of six children with four already in school and I sometimes have to part with a lot of money to pay their school fees. I am a motorcycle operator but I do not own a motorcycle of my own-I am employed by people who owns motorcycles. At the end of the day, I may collect as little as $2 per day that is hardly enough to feed my family of 6. My wife has been very supportive with her small business of selling grocery and sometimes when I do not make anything at all , she comes to my rescue and meets the needs of our family. I am so happy that GiveDirectly has given me a helping hand where I will be able to concentrate on paying school fees for my children with the hope that they will have a better future than mine." "I am a motorcycle taxi rider married and blessed with two children. Receiving money from GiveDirectly has been a blessing in our lives. This is because we can comfortably cater for our day-to-day needs unlike before when we could sleep on an empty stomach due to financial constraints. Upon receiving my transfer I used it in buying foodstuffs worth $180 and additionally, bought two hens worth $120 to add to the one that I had., Having enough foodstuffs in the house makes me a fulfilled parent because I am assured that my family would have enough for their consumption. This was not easy before because I did not have a stable source of income. I am grateful for the monthly support that came to uplift our lives." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"My family of three has been reliant on charcoal burning and selling as the primary source of family income. Because I could not afford to buy the entire tree, I always traveled far into the forest to dig out the tree trunks and later burn them to charcoal. Traveling to the site on a motorcycle has been extremely expensive, and the process of getting the job done has been extremely exhausting. After receiving the transfer from GiveDirectly, my family decided to invest some of the funds in purchasing a bicycle, but only in parts to be assembled later. I spent $15 from the second transfer on bicycle frames and hope to continue purchasing other parts with the subsequent transfer. I also spent $12 on groceries for my three-person family and the remaining $3 on transportation to the forest where I obtained the charcoal. I am thankful that the plan we devised with my family has been successful, and I hope to have an easier time in the future when I finally get a bicycle."

"I work as a motorcycle rider and my parents depend on me because they are of age and unemployed. As soon as I received the cash transfer, I used $12 to buy some new clothes and the remaining $18 for food for my family of three family members. I was grateful because I spent my last transfer on repairing my motorcycle, which had mechanical issues, and wanted to have some new clothes." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I used $20 to pay school fees for my younger brother and used the remaining amount to buy food for our family. I am a father of two but I still take care of my two brothers and my ageing parents who stay with me in the same household. Currently, I am a motorcycle operator and the income that I make is hardly enough to buy food for my family. I have had support from my mother when it comes to payment of school fees of my younger brother and this has at least reduced the burden of payment of school fees by a great extent. I am so grateful for a helping hand from GiveDirectly. This has made life for me and my family quite easy especially during such hard times." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)
