"Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I was living in a grass thatched house. My life is currently different because I have been able to build a new house, spacious and iron roofed. Apart from the house, I also have heifers that I am keeping in my homestead. These are living assets that I can readily depend on in case of a financial need."

"I spent a portion of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as bricks, some bags of cement and sand. This was for the construction of a new house, the previous one was in poor condition and very small. I was always being rained on because of the leaky roof. My children used to seek shelter from friends and relatives which was not right. I also paid school fees for my children who are still in primary schools for them to sit for their midterm exams. I later bought some new clothes for my children because their previous ones were all torn. The amount of money that had remained, I bought some enough foodstuffs for my family."

"I spent my second transfer on buying building materials which I have used in replacing my old roof. The iron sheet used was old and leaking and I felt the wind might blow my roof off anytime. This is why I chose to replace the existing one. I also used part of my transfers on buying household items such as bedding for my children since they have been sleeping on old and thin ones. They have not complained but I know they did not have comfortable sleep. SO I decided to upgrade for them The rest of the transfer I used on clearing fees arrears for my children so that they may not be sent home anymore for fees. I am not worried again about them but focused to ensure they are always in school"

"My life is now different because I have my own semi-permanent house. I was married for over 20 yrs I have been sleeping under small huts which were temporary with some grass-thatched roofing. All through the roof has been leaking and was always giving me some sleepless nights. Secondly, I had to change the grass roofing yearly, this was costly according to my financial status. I am happy because my family and I are now sleeping under a permanent spacious iron-roofed house. I no longer worry about the heavy downpours or even the wild animals that were sometimes attacking us. If it were not for GiveDirectly coming to my village I don't think if I would have achieved all this."

"I have a small shop which I selling clothes and African materials ( vitenge ) the business was struggling because of inadequate stock. I stocked the business and now I make more sales since more clients who come don't turn away because of lack of their preferred items from the shop. Today , I am able to provide for my family with ease out of the doubled profits I make from the business. Secondly, I have build a decent iron sheet shelter that accommodates my family comfortably. The shelter we lived in before was old and weak with its roof dilapidated. As of now, I feel happy living in a decent place with no worries about any weather change. Truly, had it not been for the financial support which I received from GiveDirectly I wouldn't afford this changes that makes my entire life happy and better placed."
