"I received an Mpesa message in my phone and since I was not expecting to receive any money, I was curious to know who could have sent me the cash. When I read the contents of the message, I was greatly overjoyed because I had finally received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I thanked them since I could now build a decent iron roofed house to live with my family."

"My first transfers which GiveDirectly sent to me, I had prioritize on building a house. I spent KES 40000 on purchasing materials for constructing a timber wall house with ironsheets roof. I choose to build a semi permanent house so that we would have a comfortable house to live in. I then spent KES 9000 on clothings for my family members. The remaining amount, I spent KES 3000 on buying foodstuffs and another KES 3000 on purchasing farm inputs for planting so that we would have food in the near future."

Mwei
received a $501 initial payment.
"Before, I didn't have the courage to invite guests to my home due to the state of our house. It had leaking roof and was not good to live in but we had no other option then. I am now glad that GiveDirectly has changed my story and now I am confident that whenever I got some visitors, they have a comfortable place to stay. Again, I see myself in the same level with my fellow villagers in that I got a ironed roofed house which I couldn't afford to build on my own anytime soon."
