"I spent my second transfer on constructing a spacious house for my family. We use to stay in a single room house which was very small to accommodate my family and my children. I used my transfer to construct a two-roomed, iron sheet roofed house. I also, spend $250 to clear the fees arrear for my 5th child who is in secondary. Being a widow and jobless, I was struggling to educate my child since I lack adequate finances to support my kids education. With the remaining amount I bought 5 goats to start livestock rearing which is my reliable source of income for my family."

"After starting the construction of a three-room house with the first transfer, I put it on a halt after allocating part of the transfer to other projects. The second transfer enabled me to finish it up after purchasing plain sheets used on the outside walls, furnishing floors, and also completing the roof. I spent 15000KES of the remaining amount on paying school fees for my child currently in secondary school, added a brood of chicks that have now grown, multiplied enabling me to sell part of it, and obtained a Dorper sheep."

"I have an old hut with which I have lived for the last 30 years. I have sacrificed with this single house for so long so that my children could go to school. With receiving this money, it is a fulfilled hope that I am going to build a new house. Leaking roof and cold nights will become a story of the past, thanks to GiveDirectly. I anticipate my new house to cost $300 from my first transfer."

"My life is now different than how it would have been because I managed to construct a decent spacious house that can accommodate all my family members. The previous one had some weak walls with holes all over plus a leaky roof. During the winter seasons, it was worse because all we could do was to seek shelter from friends and a bit challenging because only a few individuals owned spacious houses. This means sometimes it was not easy for one to secure the shelter. All have changed now because I am even in a position to host someone in my new house. Also, the goats and chicken that I own have made me proud because I have assets that can easily depend on in case of anything. For these miracles, it was by God's grace."

"I spent part of my second transfer on buying several building materials which include nails, timber, iron sheets, and building poles. This was purposely forb the renovation of my initial hose because the walls were weak and almost collapsing, during the rainy seasons we sed to be rained on because of the old roof. Also, I bought a goat that currently serves as the lining investment that I am now depending on. In addition, I cleared school fees for my children who are in secondary and primary respectively. Wit the remaing amount I bought enough foodstuff for my children and some other household items such mattress and plastic chairs, and jerricans"

"My grass-thatched hut is 28 years old. It has continued to wither away over the years such that when it rains, my 3 children get rained on and do not get enough sleep and comfort during the night. Receiving this money is such a great relief because I will spend around $250 to construct a new corrugated iron roofed house to give my children, especially girls a dignified accommodation."

"For the past 20 years I have never known how it feels to live in a good house. This is due to meagre earnings that cannot permit us to build a better one. In this regard, our life has stagnated in a single roomed house which denies us the right to privacy. This same structure doesn't have a door making snakes our frequent visitors. As if this is not enough, the iron sheets at the roof are held by logs since we couldn't even afford nails. It poses a security risk especially during windy days as they can be easily brought down. Receiving this money means a great change in my life, as I will be able to construct a big and better house to accommodate my family of 8 as well as improve our security."

"Receiving this money will help me build a proper house as the one I currently live in is grass thatched and would want to put up an iron sheet roof. I would also want to purchase enough fertilizers for the next growing season so that I harvest enough maize for food"

"Receiving this money means finalizing my house. For the past 2 years I have been leaving in a structure which the roof is incomplete and this is due to financial constraints. This has lowered my dignity because during rain seasons I have to seek shelter from my neighbours especially at night. I am intending to spend 50,000 Kenya shillings to purchase roofing materials for the house to be completed. This will enable us leave a comfortable life and also retain my dignity. Other than that, I am planning to invest the remaining amount in livestock keeping which will be an additional source of income to my family."

"Receiving this money means better health for me. Currently, my house is grass-thatched and I am getting rained on when it rains because half of the roof is open. This has affected me health-wise since I have suffered frequent colds, especially during the rainy season. I plan to spend a better portion of my first transfer ($400) to construct an iron-roofed house that will spare me from the night's cold. On the other hand, I will spend the remaining transfer to buy modern beddings and also to buy 7 goats to start livestock keeping for future use."
