"I can say it is poverty. I am old and do not have the strength to go look for grass to come fill my leaking roof. This has made my life so uncomfortable. I cannot also till my land because I am too old and feeding myself has been a challenge. I rely so much on my sons."

"Receiving this money would mean better and safe water for my family. It would also mean a better roof for my house and new furniture. I have spent all my life here toiling to pay school fees for my 4 children, luckily the last one completed school last year and we have no obligation anymore. In a year I was supposed to pay up to USD. 450 so I really struggled doing casual jobs in the neighborhood. This affected our development because our shelter does not have a good roof, this one is leaky and it cannot allow us to harvest rainwater. We would therefore like to build a better house and purchase a tank for USD. 600. The remaining USD. 400 we'll buy more livestock that we had sold to cater for school fees."

"My husband do construction works. At the same time , we had initiated a project in the nearby center of constructing some rental units. we have been financing it bit by bit ,whenever we get some amount we carry on with the project. When the money is not available we pause until another source is available. The construction started on 2018 . It has reached a roofing stage and this assistance from Give direct will give me a major boost to finish up the project. Once I finish up on the project and all rooms are occupied it will give us a sustainable income for my family. The project still requires USD 2000. We will invest all the money in the aforementioned project."

"As you can see we have just a single, small ,grass thatched house. It acts as our kitchen and at the same time a living room. There is inadequate space for use . Our intention is to build a better house that will be our living room .The one we currently have will be used for kitchen purposes. We intend to build a 24 iron sheet roofed house. It will cost us approximately USD 300 and also we will equip them with furnitures and fittings that will cost approximately USD 180. Also , we would want to hire land for tilling so that we can plant maize ."

"Before GiveDirectly came for enrollment, I had a dream of building a bigger house for my family but had not been able to due to financial constraints. Due to this, my children and visitors had to endure sleeping in my small grass-thatched kitchen whose roof was always leaking during the rainy season. This was because we could not sleep with them under the same roof as they are all grownups. My recent transfer enabled me to build a more spacious house hence I no longer worry about hosting some visitors and my children's condition at night. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for changing my living standards through the transfer."

"Receiving this money means building a new house for my family. I am currently living in a small house that is not enough to accommodate my whole family. I have a family of eight children. Some of them are teenagers and we cannot sleep in the same room. This forces them to look for shelter from other neighbors. I used to have a two bedroom house but unfortunately it caught fire and burned down to ashes. This made us to erect a single room structure which we cook and sleep in the same room. This makes it difficult to even host a visitor for a night. I intend to use the first cash transfer from Givedirectly to build a two bedroom, iron sheet roofed house which will cost $500 in total. I will then use the second cash transfer to buy two beds and mattresses, food and pay school fees for my children."

"Receiving this money means that our daily income shall increase since we shall buy an additional lactating cow. Currently, we consume all the milk we acquire from the only cow we have. As such, we have been yearning for another cow to ensure we have surplus milk for sale because there exists a ready market for the commodity. Luckily, we have relatively large grazing land for livestock. Also, we shall utilize any remaining amount of the transfer on improving our kitchen because the one we have has a leaking grass-thatched roof. In brief, this transfer will change our lives in the best way possible."

"I have children in various secondary and primary schools and all I want for them is quality grades that can allow them to join university to pursue good courses. When the cash transfer, I use KES20000 to pay school fees for my children this will give them ample time in schools to study. I am confident with minimal interruption they will attain good grades. In addition, I will use another KES26000 to buy a dairy cow. This will be an added asset to my family and I will enjoy a higher milk production for both household use and sales to earn an extra income. To make my children happy and safe, I will use KES25000 to build a two room, iron-roofed house just next to mine. Twill ensure the better comfort, space for their private studies, and good security. I wish to spend the remaining amount mainly on my family,y food, clothing and household items."

"I primarily depend on subsistence farming to meet my family's needs and since crop farming doesn't do well due to long drought in our area, livestock keeping becomes a reliable source of income. To be receiving this cash transfer means I will have added cows to my farm. I wish to use KES40000 to buy a dairy cow to add to my heart. I prefer adding cows since they will assure us a consistent income from milk sales thus can meet my family's needs. I am lucky to have to build a kitchen and a living house that has given my young family the comfort and pride of having a home. I have a grass-thatched Kitchen which is old making it slowly unfit to stay in and regular replacement of grass makes it expensive for us. I am planning to spend KES50000 to build a new iron-roofed house so that as my children grow older they will have good place to spend their nights and enough space for their studies. I will use KES20000 on my family basic needs mainly clothing and food and household items."

"This means a lot to me. I have a grass thatched house which I been living for the past 20 years. When I get this money i would like to build a iron roofed house that will cost around $350. That house will help me in water harvesting. In our area we get water from the river and its not safe for drinking. I normally buy drinking water from water kiosk in the nearby town which sometimes hard due to financial constraints. I also have children in school and i need to pay their school fees. I have fee balance of $900. The rest of the money will then go to expand my business so as to generate more income."
