"The roof leaks on the house I currently live in. This is uncomfortable and I fear for my health now that I am aged I might develop some complications. This has been my biggest hardship."

"Receiving this money will mean a lot. We purchased 1½ acres of land near our home and did not manage to complete the transaction because we have children in school and we had to pay fees for them. I will use KES 80,000 to clear that balance. I will use the remaining to purchase iron roofs, nail and other construction materials so that I can build a house that I purposed to."

"Receiving this money will mean a lot to me. I am married to a polygamous family. My husband left me with my 2 children and went to stay with the second wife in Londiani. I was left to take care of the children alone. I took up a job in a flower farm that its contract ended in July. The first thing that I will do with the money is build a 3-roomed, iron roofed house with KES 40,000. I will buy a cow with KES 30,000 from the transfer that I will receive so that I can get milk for my family because right now I either buy or get from my mother-in-law. I will use the remaining amount to feed my family."

"Receiving this money means good education to my children. This has been my ambition to educate them so that they can have a bright future, but due to financial challenges, this dream has not come to pass. To achieve this I intend to spend 60,000 shillings to purchase a pair of oxen and 5 goats. The pair of oxen will enable me to cultivate a large piece of land during the rainy season and harvest enough food which I can sell the extra and pay for school fees. Also, I will hire them to cultivate people lands and earn 2500 shillings on each acre which is a source of income too. I will be able to sell the goats when they multiply and educate my kids. The remaining part of the transfer will invest in renovating the roof of my house which leaks during rainy seasons."

"My live is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer in that I have been able to build for myself an iron-roofed house. I depend on small scale farming and the harvest that we get is only for consumption. This had made it impossible for me to meet some of my goals like building an iron roofed house. In my region, there are so many termites that feed on the grass that is commonly used in roofing houses. With this, one has to change the roof yearly to avoid the house from leaking and this is costly. Building an iron roofed house was my only solution but had not been to due to lack of finances. I am now glad since this is no longer the case"

"Owning a decent modern iron-roofed house for the family is the biggest difference in my daily life. Currently, I am living a better life after constructing a modern house with the aid I had received. In addition, I can comfortably meet the other needs of the family like food without struggling."

"As you can see how my house is, I can tell you that I am not comfortable. The grass that I used needs to be replaced because it leaks when there is rain. Last week, I sought new grass to replace the old ones and that meant I had to part with KES 1500 for transportation. I want change and since you have told me about these transfers, I will use KES 60,000 shillings to build a small iron roofed house to ease this stress. I will also use KES 30,000 to buy a cow because I do not own one and I spend KES 1200 a month to buy a litre of milk which is very costly. With the remaining amount, I will use it on my household needs like food, buy clothes for my children and pay some amount on school fees."

"The biggest hardship in my life has been living under a pathetic house with a leaking roof and cracking walls. I always leave in fears because this house might collapse anytime. During the rainy seasons, the situation gets worse in a manner that we are forced to borrow some sleeping space for my children. This really pains me as a mother."

"I spent $ 422 to build a more spacious iron-roofed house for my family. I live in a one room grass-thatched house whose roof is leaking. During the day, we assemble all our beddings in one corner so that we can get some space to use as our sitting room. Sleeping during the rainy season is where the major problem is. With the leaking roof, we are rained on most of the time and due to this, we constantly catch flu. This always forced us to take some loans in order to seek for medication. Building this house will qurantee us a good health and privacy as family. Also, I spent $ 75 to buy three sacks of maize, sugar, rice and other household necessities for our consumption. I still have $50 that I am saving for use in case of an emergency."

"Before GiveDirectly came for enrollment, I had so many goals that I had not been able to achieve due to lack of funds. First, my aim was to build a more decent kitchen for my family. This is because the one we had was always leaking during the rainy season. My transfers enabled me to build a more spacious iron-roofed kitchen and due to this, I no longer have worry about being rained on while cooking. This has made my daily life different as I do not have to hurry preparing meals whenever I see that it is almost raining."
