James
received a $424 second payment.
"My long-term ambition has been to start dairy farming, an alternative source of livelihood to supplement my earnings from the motorbike taxi business. I have been operating this business, but it is no longer sustainable. I used my recent transfer to venture into dairy farming by purchasing an indigenous, high-breed dairy cow. At the moment, I am very proud that it has given birth to a calf and produces 4 liters of milk per day. I always use 2 liters for family consumption and sell the other 2 liters, earning an income of $1.5 per day. Furthermore, I used the remaining amount to complete the construction of a modern, two-room, mud-plastered, iron-roofed house for the family. Before, I was living with my wife and two children in a tiny house, which was not big enough to accommodate us and our household items."

"There has been a big change of climate. The drought has been very hard hitting on us. Our livestock have have been unhealthy due to lack of feeds, although goats do well during the drought. Additionally getting water for domestic use is difficult. We have piped water from the nearby village. During this drought season, the water level is low. We get water for 1 day in two weeks. When we fill our water tank, it costs $200. That's only enough for 2 weeks.
When there's no piped water. We're forced to hire motorcycle operators to bring. It costs $3 to buy 100 litres. Very expensive. This has really affected our livelihood."

"If I am able to get the transfer, it means I won't have to depend on casual jobs anymore. Will spend more time doing my own work. I plan to rent 1 acre and plant maize. This will cost a total of $200. The one acre will give me a profit of $300. I will then continue farming and expand my acreage whilst saving. This will be my security in the future. I may even start a shop business, when I have enough savings.
To ensure that I have daily source of income. I plan to buy a second hand motorcycle for $500. I will then employ someone to do motorcycle taxi business. This will give me a daily income of $2.50. I will then have a stable source of money.
Goats do well here and I don't have them. I plan to establish goat rearing. For a start, I will buy 10 goats both male and female. This will cost me $300. The goats will expand and it means more stability for me in the future. When I have goats, I can sell them during difficult times like this. This means I will not be worried again of where to get my next meal."

Maurine
received a $440 initial payment.
"I was at home cleaning the compound with my 5 children. It was around 2 pm when I received the message notification on my phone. After checking my phone, I was very happy to see that I had received the cash transfer. I was positive that I would accomplish most of my goals through the aid. I had to wait for my spouse who was out to pick up the kids from school. When he arrived I informed him about the good needs and we together celebrated receiving the transfer and started to make plans on how to use the transfer."

Mapenzi
received a $28 ninth payment.
"I am a motorcycle rider with a stay at home wife. I have two children who are also fully dependent on me. I am a rider that is employed by someone and I earn $3 on a bad day and 5 dollars on a good day. My family has been living in a house with a rotten roof which during the rainy season leaks and allows for Mosquitoes to get into the house. This has been a deplorable condition. When I started receiving Givedireclty transfers I promised myself I will change this and I used 3 dollars of my January transfers on repairing a portion of the roof to allow people in the house sleep under it as it now does not leak. I have also managed to buy food over the last three months at about 4 dollars monthly to cover the family for a while as I work to make ends meet. I have also added a goat using my November transfers which I want to add to. My children were also able to enjoy a new set of clothes during the festivities which made them happy since its while since we bought them clothes."
