"Receiving this money means that I will at least solve the water problem I have.I will be buy a water tank which will help me harvest water during the rainy season.During the dry season we travel a distance of 30 minutes to get water for domestic use and watering cattle.I am also planning to build a room where I will place a posho mill which my daughter bought for me.With this I will have a source of income bearing in mind that the next posho mill is a bit far."

"My usual day entails herding my cattle and sheep in the farm during the day. What is more tedious is taking them to a stream far from home to get them drinking water . I'm always happy in the evening when i take my herd back home knowing that they had enough food for the day."

Doris
received a $544 initial payment.
"I spent some part of my first transfer to purchase iron sheets and other building materials. Before, I had a grass thatched house which was in bad condition. In this era, getting grass is not easy so my house was already leaking given that I could not get enough grass to cover the roof and the house was too squeezed too to comfortably accommodate my growing family. I have been dreaming of building a bigger and better house. Previously my children used to sleep in my relative's house. This always got me worried as there are a lot of insecurities in the night and anything could happen to them. These are what made me build a spacious modern house. I also purchased maize using some part of the transfer. The past few years our maize production has not been doing well because there was an outbreak of a certain disease and this affected the plantation so much that we could hardly harvest anything. Lastly, I spent the rest on paying school fees for my children as I managed to pay their fees on time and some to pipe water into my compound from the nearest tank in my community so that I do not have to walk long distances to draw water like before."

Abraham
received a $22 twelfth payment.
"In the next four months, I m saving on buying a water tank of a capacity of 3000 liters, this would help store rainwater in order to reduce my wife's workload. Water for domestic use is found in water points that are really far away from the homestead. Storing rainwater will make it easy for my wife and for us all.I am planning to give water to my cows at home in order to improve its milk production capacity since they usually walk longer to the watering points and their milk production is lower."

"I had left my phone in the house as I was fetching water in a nearby borehole. I did not bother looking at it given that I did not expect anything from anyone. Not even GiveDirectly since I was still in doubt if someone could decide and send you 110000 KES. At the time I decided to check my phone when relaxing, I saw the message. I had to reconfirm, that is when I believed GD had sent me money. I was very happy in my heart, Immediately walked out and met some of my neighbours who together we celebrated the rare opportunity."

"I expect my life to change in the next six months in that I will have bought a water tank for storing clean water for domestic use. I walk for a long distance to look for clean water for drinking during the dry seasons which is so tedious and time-consuming."

received a $22 twelfth payment.
"My new goal is to buy a water tank. In my area, there has been water scarcity, especially during the dry seasons. We have always had to go miles to fetch water which is a necessity for life. In most cases, I have spent a lot of money to hire someone to fetch water. This is the reason why I would like to save part of my transfers to buy a tank to be used in saving water during the rainy seasons. This will help save water to sustain my family in the dry seasons as we still hope the Governement will come up with a lasting solution for the same in my village."

Kadzo
received a $542 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have two cows that I am now depending on for milk production. I used to have three cows but all of them perished due to the severe famine that had stricken our land. The livestock lacked water and grass to feed on and they died. This was such a huge loss to me since I also depended on them for milk production in order to help me meet my daily needs. I am so happy today when I see the two cows and when I see my grandchildren go to school and them not being chased away due to lack of school fees.
I see myself now being able to start a business of selling poultry and goats here in our village, this business will enable me meet my daily needs and those of my family. All I can tell GiveDirectly is to send the rest of the transfer as soon as possible so that I can be able to start this poultry business, other than that I am very grateful to Givedirectly."

"I do most of my chores in the morning, which includes washing clothes, fetching water, picking firewood and preparing my children for school. However, in the afternoon, I rest, take a nap and also have time to visit my friends. This makes afternoon the best part of my day."

Charo
received a $541 initial payment.
"Water is a challenge in our area but I have a farm next to a river where I practice farming and previously I could manually use water containers to water the crops. This was hectic and time-consuming. The moment when I received the first transfer I bought a water pump with a portion of the money which I'm currently using to irrigate the farm. In addition to that, I had a leaking grass thatched house which is uncomfortable staying in since most of the households are destroyed by the rain. A portion of the money I used to purchase building materials which I'm already using to construct a decent house."
