"When I received the money, I decided to buy ten iron sheets for KES 8000.00 to complete the roof of my house that I constructed using the first transfer. I also used KES 9000.00 in paying school fees for my three children who are in primary school so that they can be retained in school for better learning rather than being sent home for fees like the way they were used to. Thereafter, bought three goats for KES 10500.00, these goats act as a symbol that GiveDirectly was once here. Waking up in the morning and taking them to the field is a daily reminder of the existence of GiveDirectly. For the remaining amount, I opted to keep it for the family upkeep since it was a drought season."

"I have a new goal that emerged after receiving the cash transfers which is to start a business( buying and selling goats). Since I am now jobless and only depend on my spouse for all our basic needs I believe by starting the business with being of help not only to myself but to the entire family. I will be able to pay fees timely for my kids without straining my life before."

"The main goal that I have been yearning to accomplish was to own goats and I am glad that this was a success. I will benefit a lot especially when I encounter any emergency, I will be able to sell one or two and settle them. I however do not have any other new goal in mind for now."

"I spent part of my second transfer on buying a piece of land (half an acre) at KES 10000 which I have been paying in installments. I had to settle for it because I have an idea of constructing rental stalls in the future once I get the cash. I later bought three goats at KES 10500. I am happy that at least I have valuable assets that I can rely on at any time. Additionally, I cleared fees arrears of KES 5000 for my six children in primary schools. Also, I bought a new bed and a mattress for a total of KES 12000. Previously, I used to sleep on traditional beds and old mats which I was not comfortable with. With the remaining amount of money, I bought food for my family."

"Having the goats in my compound has brought the biggest difference in my daily life that I will always be proud to mention. I opted for the goats because they take little time to mature and they can survive so well in my region. I am hopeful that very soon I will have many of them considering that they reproduce twice a year. I am planning to sell two or three of the offspring once they increase in number and start up a business selling vegetables in the village. For now, I do not have any stable job to raise my three children. On most of the days, we used to lack basic needs such as food, and this has been frustrating me for a while. I am now happier that through the goats, I will be able to meet all my needs without struggling like before."

"I have been suffering from a big sore on my left leg for the past 28 years. As a result, I cannot walk for long distances and can not do heavy because it is painful. Therefore, I decided to venture into dairy farming to fend for my family. So when I received my second transfer, I spent KES 30,000 on the purchase of a second dairy cow. This means increased milk production hence more income. Secondly, due to my health condition dairy farming doesn't require much attention compared to crop farming. Additionally, I spent KES 3300 on a bag of maize and KES 2500 on 20 kilos of beans. This has helped feed my family for the past month and will still sustain us for the next month. Furthermore, KES 5000 was used on purchasing a goat. This will act as an alternative milk source when my dairy cows are in their dry spells. Lastly, I spent KES 10,000 on the latest clothing fashion. This has made my family dress more decently compared to before when we could only afford second-hand clothes."

"Three months ago I was paid my 2 months wages in lump sum. This was good money for me as I received a total of 35000 KES. I spent the money in buying two goats and the rest of the money was spent on buying food and clothes for my family. I also settled my debt of 700 KES from the local food kiosk. This brought so much happiness in my family."

"I enjoy keeping domestic animals because I consider them a store of wealth. I started off by raring goats until I had seven. I then agreed on a butter trade with another farmer who exchange for me the goats with a cow. I kept this it for about one year and finally it delivered a healthy calf in December last year. I was very happy at that moment because I felt already creating stripes in this business and very soon I'll have enough to be able to sell whenever I need big amount of money urgently."

"The goal when I receive the transfers is to start a shop and a grocery business so that I have an income-generating activity. It will enable me to earn a profit of KES 300 a day which is sufficient for a family of 5 members s. In a day I require KES 200 for food and water. Besides, I will use a portion of the transfers to buy 4 indigenous goats which do well in our area due to hot weather conditions. As they multiply, I will sell at a profit and use the proceeds to pay for schools fees and stationary. Once I realized this objective, I will be fascinated because I will have a regular source of money."
