Christina
received a $530 second payment.
"I invested a better part of my second transfer on poultry farming through constructing a chicken cope and stocked 50 chickens. Today, I am able to supply chickens to different people around my area which means I have a stable source of income. I also bought my livestock feeds and medicine. The remaining amount was majorly spent on buying my household expenditures."

"It is every married woman's dream to bear children and more so in our Giriama culture where having a child is the greatest treasure. However, this great blessing has not been my portion. For the past 14 years that I have been married , I have not been able to bear children. This condition has been brought about by a condition that I believe I suffer from but has not yet been medically diagnosed since I have no money to seek for treatment. All I know is that I suffer from severe stomach pains.I have tried all traditional medicines but to no avail. As a result,my husband ended up marrying a second wife and they currently have children. My childlessness really saddens me and I greatly wish to go for treatment. Thus financial constraint to seek medical help is the biggest hardship that I face."

"Ever since I received the cash transfers, my life has been vibrant. I feed well on a variety of foods. In addition to this, I acquired basic household items tsuch as a nice mattress and blankets that I did not possess. I am leading a life that I dreamed of. I am very happy that I have access to money for my medical care. Previously, I had no money to access medicines and better health care for my ulcers. I am grateful that I have money that will enable me access better medication at anytime."

"My life is much better than it was in the past. I proudly live in a two roomed permanent house courtesy of the GiveDirectly cash transfers. I am very happy that I can dress decently and I look much healthier than before. More so,I can afford good medical care at anytime without any worries. Previously, I was miserable and very unhappy. I recall at one time, I was ill but could not afford any medicine. Life was very unbearable. GiveDirectly has brought so much joy into our lives."

"My firstborn daughter developed a condition that has destabilized her hormonal balance ever since she was 6 years old. At first, she was misdiagnosed, and even operated on at Kenyatta national hospital. This didn't help her, and it was only later when we discovered she was suffering from something that tempers with her hormones. It caused her to rapidly grow beyond her age and this worried doctors every time we visited the clinic. The entire progress was very costly and it was hard to meet it. At some point, we were referred to Gertrude, a pediatric hospital. Being a private hospital, it was even more expensive to seek medical attention there. The entire process cost over half a million Kenyan shillings. She is a teen now, and what troubles me a lot is the medicine that she has to use on a daily basis for the rest of her life, given the side effects and the cost of medication. I have spent most of my income on this leaving none for other developments in the family."

Grace
received a $22 twentieth payment.
"The biggest in my daily life is that nowadays I am happy and hopeful. The fact that I managed to pay my son's medical expenses still appears like a miracle to date. He is epileptic and this used to stress me a lot. I used the transfers I received from Give Directly to pay for the herbal medicine that has really helped him. I feel good because he is responding well to medication. My biggest joy is that I was able to afford to pay for medication and he is improving healthwise"

"Due to old age,am no longer able to do most work in the farm.I was also diagnosed with hypertension and put on medication.I therefore rely solely on milk proceeds from my cow. There are times when I cannot milk and during this time,it becomes very difficult even to put food on the table let alone have money to purchase medicine."

"The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving these transfers is that I have always had the medicine ready and before time. I am suffering from pressure and getting medicine on a monthly basis is very costly. Since I do not have a stable income, I have always struggled to get the medicine. I have always had to borrow and be in debt which has taken me time to payback. GD transfers have been very helpful because I always use part of it to buy the medicine. My health is improving and I am no longer in debt."

"In the year 2000 is suffered from a heart disease that weakened my body and drained all my finances.I did not know what exactly was the disease.Infact sometimes I visited the hospital and all I was told is that I was fine while I was not.I visited several hospitals but I did not get the right treatment.I spend over Ksh100,000 to cater for the medication. My cattle business which I was doing at that time collapsed due to lack of finances.I resorted to herbal medicine which was cheaper but at the end of it I saw some improvement. My health was not good for close to 10 years. Those 10 years were the most challenging and hardest in my life because I was not efffective in my work and I really strained financially.I feel a bit better right now."
