"Upon receipt of receiving my transfer, I knew that it was the ideal time for me to purchase a motorcycle. This is because I use to ride a rental motorcycle that was unreliable. This is because the owner would demand payment even in challenging circumstances. As I ride boda boda for a living, my wife studies a secretarial course. We are blessed with one child. I already have $250 placed as a downpayment for the motorcycle, $100 to upgrade my ant-infested home, and $100 to purchase a smartphone to understand the digital age. I am happy my dream to own a motorcycle has been achieved." (Occupation: Motorcycle or bicycle taxi)

"I wish to be able to build a new house in place of the current one, which is in bad shape and I fear that it may collapse. Since I lack a source of income, and my husband’s earnings from his motorcycle taxi and small vegetable-selling business are mere, my construction resources are limited. However, through the cash transfers, there is an ideal chance for me to build the house; I particularly want one with two rooms, made of mud walls and iron sheets roof. In the short run, I plan to continue saving money through my self-help group and withdraw it at the end of the year to start the project.  "

"During his return trip from Mariakani town, my son was injured in a motorcycle accident. He suffered severe wounds as a result of the collision, and medical attention was given to him right away. He stayed in the hospital for a full week, which resulted in a hefty hospital bill. When I got my February transfer, I spent $15 to pay off my enormous $500 debt. I am glad he was discharged from the hospital and is now recovering at home thanks to donations from family, friends, and kind neighbors. I spent the remaining $19 on food in addition to covering the hospital bill. I purchased two kilograms of beans, a kg of sugar, five packets of maize flour, some fish, and 500 grams of salt. I paid some money to buy water for use at home. Our local water sources have dried up due to the intense heat, forcing us to pay exorbitant prices for water from vendors."

"It has been very challenging for my husband and me to navigate life without a reliable source of income. I hardly generate enough revenue as a casual worker selling charcoal to meet the needs of the family. Due to declining clientele and rising fuel costs that discourage people from choosing motorcycles as their primary mode of transportation, my husband also encounters challenges in his line of work as a motorcycle rider. We've been compelled to skip meals as a result of these issues because we don't have enough money to provide our family with enough food. I spent $6 on three packets of maize flour after receiving my February transfers. This gave us sufficient confidence that we will have enough food to last us a full week. Along with purchasing food, I also spent $15 on primary school tuition for my four kids. Finally, with an eye toward future investment, I paid $14 for three hens. I'm confident that in three months the hens will have multiplied and I'll have enough money to buy some goats. Since the goats will sell for high market prices, I will recover my initial investment many times over."

"I used to ride a motorcycle taxi but I got into an accident and broke one my arms which is not working even now. I am doing casual jobs to survive. I am a father of four and my family depends on me since I am the first born. I would like this year to become an animal keeper since for me animals are a profitable business. I want to buy goats and chicken that will reproduce and increase in number so I can sell them and take care of my family. I will also be able to sustain myself even with my broken arm if I get this animals."

"I want to make sure my motorcycle transport company is successful before the end of the year so I may add another motorcycle and potentially increase my income. It has long been my goal to operate a hardware store in our neighborhood urban center that sells motorcycle replacement parts. If everything goes according to plan."

"My uncle is a trailer driver, he has promised me if I am able to get a driving license he will teach me how the trailer transport business works for a year and then help me secure a job with his employers. I saved $30 from February transfers and I hope to get to $180 which will be sufficient for this training. I want to be able to get this opportunity because I now do Motorcycle taxi business and I am not making much and I would like to change this. I also live in a one room house with my family, I want to expand to at least a three roomed house. My hope is I will have enough money to put up this new structure for my family." "My goal this year is to get to a point that I can afford to secure my own motorcycle which will ensure I increase the amount of money I make daily. As I had mentioned earlier I am saving monthly $30 of my transfer which is getting me closer to my goal. I also want to go back to animal farming. I used to have chicken before and the number had greatly increased, when I has 50 chicken, I exchanged 10 for a goat until I got 6 goats. This goats gave birth to young ones which grew and after selling them I got to owning two cows which unfortunately died due to the drought. I now want to start rearing chicken and my hope is as the year progresses I will get to this numbers which will allow me go back to where I used to be with my animals." "I was delighted to receive my second transfer from Give Directly, which was  Ksh 45,000. As this was the highest sum of money I had ever held in my hands at once, I had to be vigilant. I added ksh 15000 that I had previously saved to ksh 45000 and spent ksh 65000 on a second-hand motorcycle since I've been having trouble with my business because it requires a lot of commuting. I typically use public transportation, which is highly expensive, unreliable, and time-consuming, to the market after purchasing chickens from farmers in Kimalel and Koriama villages."
