John
enrolled.
"For a long time one of my grass thatched houses has been leaking during rainy season. I want to build another house made of corrugated iron sheets at a cost of $400. The latter is more efficient as it will enable me collect rain water for domestic use.
As for the second transfer my wife and I have aligned that we will spend $350 for a good dairy cow whose milk will be a source of income which is going to boost the education of my three children in secondary school. "

"My next goal is to save part of my next transfers with the intention of buying a water tank. This will really save us from the hassle of carrying heavy jerrycans of water through very long distances. The water tank would enable us to harvest and store rainwater. I can't wait to rest my back from this tiresome exercise"

"My main job before I got enrolled in this program was water supply which I did on foot because I could not afford to hire a cart as most people in this business do. The job kept me going even though it was barely able to take care of my basic needs and was very exhausting. After delivering several jerrycans of water to different destinations the whole day, I could not even manage to prepare my own meal at the end of the day and would mostly eat out or just go hungry. The difference I currently have in my life courtesy these transfers is having a better and a less strenuous job. I managed to start a clothing business that I run in a temporary business structure near my area of residence. I am glad that I no longer have to strain as much as I did before and what I make on a good day is almost triple what I would earn when I worked as a water supplier."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that for the first time in my life, I will be cooking in my iron-roofed kitchen, after using a grass-thatched hut for many years with no hopes of upgrading. Considering the financial hardships I had, I was left to persevere the pitiable condition of my hut which was slowly weakening due to walls cracking and grass roof peeling off. I used to make meals for my family from my in-law's house whenever it rained as my kitchen could get flooded with the rainwater. This habit made me desperate and I lost my self-esteem in society. I had longed to build another kitchen but my hopes were slowly fading away since the scarce resources could not allow me to realize my goal. I am happy and thankful to GiveDirectly because, for the first time, I will be cooking under an iron-roofed kitchen courtesy of GiveDirectly."

"When I received my first transfer, I spent a large amount from it to buy some building materials to use in building a decent and spacious house for my family. I bought some iron sheets, timber, nails and also paid the full cost of this work. I settled on this since the one we were living in was old and its roof was leaking from one side. My family was always forced to squeeze themselves in one corner during the rainy season and our beddings would at times get soaked with the rainwater whenever it rained heavily. I spent the remaining amount on buying some basic needs for my family. I bought some decent clothes and shoes, one sack of maize flour and other household necessities."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a water tank. I used to walk for a long distance to fetch water for domestic use. This was taking much of my time which I could have used on my farm. I could also take my livestock to drink water from the river which was also very far, this was affecting the milk production because the livestock could get tired and spent the rest of the day resting. At times my children would help me fetch the water and I was so happy but this was only during the holidays. Currently, I have bought a five thousand liters water tank. I am so happy because I no longer have to walk for a long distance to look for water both for domestic used and for my livestock at times because I have enough stored in the tank. I have devoted much of my time on my daily chores at home. My children also do not have to walk for a long distance for water but rather spent their time to do school assignments. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

Laurence
received a $39 twelfth payment.
"The struggles of being employed to sell water have really made start thinking of doing my own business. I have been going to work at five o'clock and leave work at eleven o'clock at night which is usually risky and hectic. For quite some time now, I have been saving all the monthly transfer that I have been getting from GiveDirectly. The recent one was not different because I also saved it too. I have already thought of what I want to do which is to buy a motorcycle. I feel like this will be a good idea considering the high market demand for motorbike transport services and many other advantages such as going home early hence not risking my life and even getting better pay than what I am earning currently."

"I am happy that GiveDirectly has greatly changed my living standard. Before receiving my transfer, I used to go for long-distance to fetch water which was time-consuming and tiring. I also used to spend a lot on my household daily basic needs since I bought everything including milk which was costly. When I received my transfer, I used part of it to buy a water tank that will help me harvest water during the rainy season. I feel this will help me reduce the time spent on fetching water and am assured of clean water at my doorstep unlike before. Also, I used some amount to buy a cow which has changed my life. I currently have enough milk for my household consumption and some to sell to earn an extra income. I used the remaining amount to buy a barbed wire to use in fencing my compound. I am happy that my properties are secured from livestock around our home."
