"I have wished to start livestock rearing especially goats as my reliable source of income for my family. In addition, whenever I face any financial crisis I will be able to sell some to cater for such emergency .I spent my second transfer to purchase 6 goats at $50 each. With the remaining amount I used part to hire ox-plough to assist me in tilling my farm before planting. The other part assisted me in buying household utensils including water jerrican and one tank so that I may store enough water for my family, I also bought enough food for my family."

"My life is different than if I had never received my transfer in that, I was able to start my own small business of buying and selling firewood. This job earns me an income of 2 to 3dollars per day which assists me in taking care of small daily needs like sugar and water. Also, I am now living in a comfortable house with my children after constructing two houses. In addition, my kid is learning without being interrupted due to lack of school fees."

"For the past 3 years, I have been fetching drinking from a river that is 4 kilometres away. This usually makes me feel very tired and I have been hoping that I get an opportunity to buy my own donkey. Receiving this money is a dream come true for me because I will use approximately KSH 15,000 to buy my donkey that will ease fetching of water. The other amounts will also enable me to build a modern semi permanent house. This will enable me to get rain water which is safer to drink as compared to the river water."

Gilbert
received a $493 second payment.
"The well-constructed chicken coop with a capacity of 100 chicken currently is a great difference I would not have realized without the transfer. I have also managed to put up a water storage facility after connecting piped water to my doorstep. Alongside these, I also bought a good breed of cow currently giving us enough milk. These have kept me working strictly on my farm unlike before when I would work all day in casual labor in other people's farms"

Flora
received a $493 second payment.
"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a water tank for storing clean water for drinking and also for domestic use. I used to walk for a long distance to collect clean water and this was taking much of my time which I could have used to cultivate my farm. I could wake up very early in the morning to be able get the clean water. Sometimes the queue was so long at the river and one could take much time to wait. This was tiresome and time consuming. I could reach home and not able to do other chores. Currently I no longer get stress up on where I will get the water since my tank is full. I have enough time to cultivate my farm and every attend to other work at home. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard."

"My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a water tank. I used to walk for a long distance to collect clean water for domestic use. This was so tiresome and time consuming. I could struggle so much to keep time since it was not a easy task, I used to wake up very early in the morning to get to the river because everyone in the village was heading there to get the clean water before they begin their daily activities. Sometime the queue could be so long and one could get home late and not able to do other chores. When I received the second transfer I bought a water tank and when it rains I collect clean water. This has enabled me to save so much time to do other chores at home. I no longer get stress up on where I could get the water. We have clean water for drinking and we are no longer exposed to water related diseases. We are so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has improved our living standard to be much better than before."

"My life is different than how it would have been had I not received the transfer. This is because I have an addition of a dairy cow and this is an assurance to me of an increase in income. Also, having a water tank is an achievement to my family and has brought a lot of happiness to my children. This is because they now have enough time to study in the evening after school as they no longer go to the stream in search of clean water."

"I currently live in a one roomed grass thatched house with my spouse and four children. Receiving this money means erecting a more spacious house at a cost of $350. The house I plan to construct will be iron-roofed, hence I will also buy a 3000 litre water tank at $150, for harvesting rain water during rainy seasons. I will also use $200 to buy an heifer that will multiply in future and produce milk, thus being a source of income for my family."

"My family and I currently live in a 0.5 acre land that is not sufficient for tilling, hence receiving this money will enable me to buy a 2 acre piece of land at $600. I will then use $250 to build a better house since the current one-roomed grass thatched hut we live in with my spouse and 2 children is too tiny and leaks in water during rainy seasons. I also intend to buy one dairy cow for milking, thus the lessening the daily worry of where to get money to buy milk for my family consumption."
