"The new goat that I had before receiving the transfer to build a better kitchen house. I had a small grass thatched house that was leaking from inside. This was so demoralizing, especially during the rainy season. Currently, I am so grateful because I have built a better house. I no longer get worried like before. GiveDirectly has changed our living standard to be much better than before."

"When I withdrew the money, I first paid KES 18000.00 for college fees for my child who was on the verge of dropping out of college due to lack of fees. I also bought 6 pieces of Dumuzas iron sheets for KES 5700.00to add a second room to my house because it was small and congested to accommodate us and the household items. Besides that, I bought two goats for KES 9000.00 and a mattress for KES 6000.00. I preferred the goats over a cow because they can cope with the drought situation in our area. In addition to that, I added some stock to boost my business of selling fried fish which was collapsing, and used the remaining amount to buy some food for my family."

"I depend on my daughter who runs a small kiosk business selling vegetables. Previously, I earned a living through raising of livestock. The drought that has lasted for over three years now, killed most of the livestock. My source of income was lost and I cannot provide for the family. When I received my recent transfer, I spent KES 1000 on buying five packets of 2kg maize. We did not have any food left in the house and were just surviving on a cup of hot water and some wild fruits. Besides buying food, I bought a goat at KES 2000. Having lost so many livestock before, I want to start all over again and accumulate wealth through rearing the goats."

"Recieving this money would help me to buy livestock such as goats. I would buy six goats which would cost me Mk120,000. I would buy goats because they are easier to take care considering my age and health which is deteriorating slowly and I would sell them to be able to provide food and medicine."

"Recieving this money would help me to buy food for my family. I will buy 7 bags of maize which would sustain my family until the month of December. I would also use it to buy livestock such as goats. I would buy 4 goats which would cost me K240,000. The remaining cash transfer I would use it as a capital to start a rice business. A bag of rice would cost me K40,000. My target market would be my community members who I can be selling to on cash or they can pay in installments and Phalula market which is close to my village. This would help me improve my livelihood because I would use the profits to be able to provide basic needs for my children."

"I plan on starting a goat rearing project, this is easy to manage and it can also be an additional source of income. At the moment I don't have the cash at hand to initiate the project but I am hopeful that I would be able to save up money from the chicken project. I am so grateful for the opportunity that came our way for us to uplift our lives."

"I spent part of my first transfer on buying several building materials which comprise iron sheets, building poles, nails, timber and threads which cost around KES 40000. I had intended to construct a new one because the initial one was in critical condition. I have always been living in fear and worry because it would collapse at any time and left homeless. I am now a happy soul because finally, I am sheltering in a decent shelter together with my two children. On top of that, I purchased two goats at KES 7000. These will now be the only assets that I will be relying on on in case of any financial difficulties or even emergencies. With the remaining amount, I bought foodstuffs for my family and other household items that I was lacking."
