Loice
received a $485 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is payment of school fees for my kids and availability adequate food for my family. Initially, I relied on casual labor in order to feed my family and at the same time fetch irrigation water from a far away dam. This was quite tough on me but with GiveDirectly I am grateful because I am relieved of casual labor and my kids have grown healthier and happier."

"Receiving this money means a boost to my agricultural products. I am a full-time farmer that rears dairy cows for milk and farm vegetables and beans for sale. I plan to add a dairy cow to the ones that I have to boost milk production since I sell milk to my neighbors and also buy a water tank and pipes that I will use to store water pumped from the nearby river for irrigation of the crops that I grow. A boost in these activities means increased income"

"Receiving this money means improved food security. I love farming and I have started tilling my land as I expect to get money to buy certified seeds. In my village, we buy vegetables from the market and I would like to take that opportunity to be the supplier. I intend to do small-scale farming using the irrigation method since our area is prone to drought. I need capital of around KES 30000. This will help me get a continuous flow of income as I have a ready market."

"The biggest difference in my daily life is that my family now feeds well unlike before. This is because I was able to purchase foodstuffs that will still last us for some time. Also, I have been consistent with irrigation farming and this has led to an increase in my daily sales. This has enabled me to meet most of our needs on time and be able to save some money unlike before."

received a $11 initial payment.
"The first thing I did with this money was to save half of the money that I put KES.900 into my savings account. I plan on saving up to KES.15000 which I can start a farming project. I plan to plant fruits and vegetables. Even in this drought with this money, I would be able to buy water enough for irrigation. This would provide food for my family as well as start a business. The rest of the money is KES.300, I spent it on food. I am thankful to Give directly for looking after us."

"First of all as i said i am a farmer, so i will purchase a water pump which will help me towards irrigation farming. Secondly, receiving this money means i will now buy bricks which will be used for building a house. In case i run out of money, i am sure that the money i will realise from farming will also help me."

Bett
received a $495 initial payment.
"I had so many goals that I had wished to accomplish but I had not been able to due to financial constraints. One of them was to start a poultry keeping project since I had already started irrigation farming and the only thing remaining was to mechanize it. Being able to build a chicken coop is so far the biggest achievement that has made my life different and I am so happy and grateful to have achieved it. I am planning to buy more chicken soon very soon using the amount that I still have from the transfer. I will be using income from this project to meet our basic needs and to pay school fees for my children on time."

received a $496 initial payment.
"Farming has been difficult not only on our farms but also in every household within our village due to the recurring periods of less to no rainfall at all. This has been so devastating in many instances seeing our crops dry up before their maturity stages forcing us to buy all the foodstuff from other farmers who have been practicing irrigation on their farms as they have access to piped water. On receiving this first transfer, I had to spend KES 15000 in buying and connecting pipes from the main distribution pipe to my doorstep. This will ease my all-season farming since I am soon making extensions of the pipes to my garden. I also had school fees areas for my three children and had to pay KES 17000 to clear the debts and to cover part of the new term. With the remaining amount, I managed to construct a new kitchen after demolishing an old one that had been in use for more than 10 years now. I am glad that it turned out that it will not only be serving just like a kitchen but also giving an extra room with one bed that can accommodate at least two of my children or a visitor whenever we have one."

"Being a farmer in a drought-prone area has negative impacts on agricultural production. It is no wonder that farmers in rainfed areas are abandoning farming as a source of livelihood. I am lucky to be among the farmers living along Chepkulo River. My dream has always been to buy a generator to pump water to my farm for purposes of irrigation. I plan to buy spend KES 24000 on the same. Receiving this money will enable me to farm without having to worry about rain."
