"I no longer work on the farm because of the negative effects of the drought. I heavily rely on my son to take care of our daily needs. He runs a store where he sells appliances and other household goods. My husband is too old and too ill to work and support the family. We have experienced many difficulties since the drought, including not having enough money to buy food. We have accumulated significant debt as a result of being forced to purchase food on credit. I chose to use my entire second transfer, plus an addition from the first, to purchase a goat for $40 in an effort to wisely invest the transfer's funds. I've been a farmer for more than twenty years, and I intend to use my experience to raise livestock to amass wealth. The goat will multiply and increase my initial investment in a year. I will have the choice to sell some of the goats and take care of the emergency if one arises."

"For over 2 years, I have desired to start goat keeping as my reliable source of income. This is because it is a light activity and does not require a lot of time to perform. Additionally, I am suffering from severe ulcers a health condition that I have been struggling with for so long. I spent my recent transfers to acquire on goat for $20, My aim is to sell its offspring once it reproduces to cater for the basic needs as well as seek advanced medical assistance. Furthermore, my daughter-in-law had been blessed with a newborn baby so I spent the remaining amount to purchase sufficient food and gifts for her and the child."

"I am married with four children. I used to work as a motorcycle rider but after injuring my hand, I cannot work as a rider and also cannot do most of the heavy-duty work with my hands. The biggest challenge is providing for my family in terms of food and paying for my children’s school fees. As soon as I received my cash transfers, I used $20 to buy a goat and distributed evenly the remaining amount toward food and school fees. I was grateful because I wanted my children to have uninterrupted classes."

"A couple of weeks before I had received the money, I had happened to take some items on loan at my neighborhood store which included maize flour and sugar just to mention a few. This was because at the time we barely had any food in the house and we were about to go hungry. As soon as I received the funds from the Organization I decided to settle that debt and I ended up paying KES 1,200. Later on I proceeded to put away a KES 1,000 into my savings account because I hoped to buy goats. Also I ended up using KES 400 by spending it by purchasing almost a kilogram of sugar and also bread on a day-to-day basis for a couple of weeks. I remained with a balance of KES 400 which I decided to help pay for my two grandchildren tuition because they were almost getting kicked out of school."

"Upon withdrawing the transfers, I decided to settle a balance of KES 900 for my grandchild in tuition because she had been out of school due to the debt and at the time her folks had no money either. I also decided to deposit KES 1,000 into my savings account in case of a rainy day in the future and also apart from that I also was looking into buying a couple of goats. Lastly I remained with a balance of KES 1,100 which I used buy six packets of maize flour with because there was hardly any food left the house."

"I spent part of my recent cash transfer on buying a goat for a total of $25. I have always loved goat rearing but because of financial constraints, I could not afford any. I settled for them because their pastures are readily available and they reproduce twice a year. I hope that soon I will have many of them which will enable me to achieve some other goals. Also, with the remaining amount of money, I bought food for my family and other household needs."

"I spent $20 of my recent cash transfer on purchasing a goat. This has been my long-time dream to rear them in my homestead but I could not afford any at my own cost. I feel grateful and happy because I am certain very soon I will have many of them. I am certain that once they will increase they will generally change my living standards because I will be in a position to sell one or two and sort all my household bills. With the remaining amount of money, I opted to pay fees for my five children in who are primary schools. I am glad that they are now studying peacefully without any disturbances."

"Since my two children started school, I have been working hard at both the firewood business and the small hairdressing business I had in the village. These two have been the primary sources of income for paying school fees and purchasing household goods. When I received the most recent transfer, I spent $20 on a goat that I believe will continue to reproduce and will come in handy when my children progress to the next level of their studies, where I will need to pay more school fees. Even though my hairdressing business is still small, I believe it will continue to grow with my current plan to raise awareness of my services throughout the village. I also spent the remaining $10 on groceries that my family of four has been eating for the past month. I appreciate the help and look forward to doing more with the subsequent transfer I expect in the coming months."

"After receiving the previous three transfers, I worked hard to strike a balance between buying household goods and long-term investment in my goals. Despite the high cost of living, I am grateful for the consistent support of the other four family members who receive the transfer. So far, I am glad I bought two goats for $40 each with the money I have been saving. I contributed a total of $10 from the $90 I received over the last three months, which was used to purchase household foodstuff for our family of nine. We all agreed to contribute a small amount each month to help with the purchase of groceries and other household items."

"I joined a merry-go-round group that we started in our village and I have been saving $10 per month. My plan is to continue saving money to be able to start a goat-rearing project in the future. I have always wanted to start this but I did not have the money. Goats multiply faster since they reproduce twice per year. I spent $10 on purchasing food and water. Due to prolonged drought in the area, we purchase water for drinking and domestic use. The remaining amount of the money I spent on purchasing clothes and household items that we were missing. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has supported us in meeting all our basic needs."
