"GiveDirectly does well in that it has enabled most of the people in our community to venture into different projects, This includes poultry keeping and goat rearing among other viable projects. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well."

"I was on my way to my daily hustles as a conductor when I heard a phone vibration.I checked and it was a confirmation message of $ 12 from GiveDirectly. My mother was the first person I break the good news too then finally to my husband. They felt very happy with the good news. I have been having a goal to complete the construction of an extra room that I started a few years ago. We have been living in a single room which provided no privacy as my elder son is currently 5 years, old enough to sense when something isn't right. For this reason, I am looking forward to completing the building process in the next two months. I am only left with roofing which I need 3 iron sheets and I am planning to use my next transfer of $ 30 to buy the iron sheet. I am also looking forward to starting goats and chicken rearing to serve as future evidence for GiveDirectly's support to my children. This is because goats and chickens can easily multiply within a very short time and hence make more profits which will hopefully give support in terms of money to complete the building process"

"I have used $ 20  of my recent transfer to pay my children's fees while for the remaining $ 10, I  bought more food for the family. I am a mother of 10 children, with 8 already enrolled in school while 2 are yet to start. My biggest challenge as a widow is raising fees for my children due to a lack of a  sustainable income. I have been jobless for the past four years only depending on my in-laws for financial support. Nevertheless, whatever support I get from them, is never enough to support the entire family's basic needs such as fees and It pained me so much how many times my children had been off and on to school due to lack of fees. The struggles to make ends meet began immediately after the death of my husband in 2015 when he was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I had to sell all my livestock to raise his medical bill, including 15 goats and 5 cows. However, all the sacrifices bore no fruit, he succumbed to cancer eventually. Therefore, receiving my last transfer became of great help as it brought happiness and enhance good relationships among my children unlike before, the family can now enjoy decent meals which had improved their health and they currently attend their classes without fear of being sent back home for fees."

"In my opinion, what GiveDirectly is doing well is giving us support in form of cash. This gave us the freedom to choose how to spend the transfer. As for me, I am so to that I am now able to pay school fees for my children much more easily than I used to do before I received money from GiveDirectly and also buy additional goats not to mention food. We have also joined the merry-go-round for savings and to meet other family's expenses such as fees and business expansion. I feel I have a helping hand through GiveDirectly."

"am a father of 6 and I sell charcoal to support my family of 8. In a day, I can sell only $ 5 which is too little to support the entire family's basic demands such as food, school fees, and medical expenses. Therefore, my greatest challenge as a father is providing sufficient food for the family on daily basis due to the lack of a sustainable source of income as a result of the low market. The lack of food for the family has also been elevated by extreme drought conditions which caused vegetation to dry up. I was very elated to receive the recent transfer as  I was able to buy 1 goat worth $ 25 which has been my greatest desire and achievement. The remaining $ 5 I spent on maize flour. I added 1 more goat because goats can easily multiply within a very short time hence making more profits which will assist with other family's demands such as food and school fees for my two children who are currently in primary school. The transfer has not only brought peace and harmony among us but also improved health as a result of good eating habits, which include a well-balanced diet, unlike before when having maize flour to prepare even sugarless porridge was just a dream."

"I am a father of 8 children with 6 of these children already in school. I rely on farming to raise income for supporting my family. When I received a sum of $30 recently, I used $15 to pay school fees for one of my children and used another $15 to buy a very young goat. I am targeting to improve my goat keeping business. I already have 13 goats and my target is to have one additional goat bought each month that I receive a transfer. These goats shall multiply within a very short time and they are also viable within our area. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that has changed my life this far."

"I own a motorbike that I use to carry charcoal from my village to the market. Six months ago the motorbike broke down and with no money for repair, I opted to start another business selling herbal toothbrushes(In that region the sticks are used to brush teeth). I sell one at $1 which does not give me enough money but it's the only job I can afford to venture into. I have four children, and paying school fees has been difficult, I am trying to clear the arrears I currently owe the school so that my children won't be sent home. I spent the recent transfer on the purchase of one goat which cost me $20 and $10 on food. I will use the goat to provide milk for my family."

"We decide to combine our transfers with my spouse to purchase one bale of maize flour for $21. This is because we did not have enough food for the family of 5 grandchildren, my wife and I. In addition, I spent $14 to boost my business of selling dry fish around the village. At the moment, I am happy that the business is running well and able to make more profit. Furthermore, I spent $30 to purchase one goat in order to boost my goat farming. In addition, I spent $ 10 on transport to visit my grandchild who was admitted to a hospital in Mombasa town. Similarly, I used $5 to pay part of the medical bill. at the moment, he is feeling well. Lastly, I saved the remaining amount in our marry-go-round group that we formed with 10 of our neighbors."

"I lost my husband two months ago, he was the breadwinner of the family. His death depressed me for a while. I was left with seven children that depend on me. Bills such as school fees have accumulated and the children are now at home. I am thinking of selling a few goats to send them back to school. The most recent transfer was used to buy food for $5, paid $15 for school fees, and saved $10 for rainy days."

All my children are married and we fully depend on them. My youngest son is called Rashid, he provides food for me and my husband most of the time. He works as a masonry at the nearby construction getting a pay of $6 per day. I spent the recent transfer on two goats that I am rearing hoping they will reproduce, and sell some whenever I need money to buy food."
