"My new goal is to own assets in form of livestock more so goats and cows. I believe that once I will be able to own them, I will no longer be straining in fending for my family as I used to do. This is because I will be in a position to sell one or two and sort out any pending bills. Additionally, I trust that once I will acquire the livestock I can as well achieve some other goals through them such as starting a new business by selling some of them."

"I spent part of my second transfer on buying two goats for a total of $700. I have been thinking of owning them for quite some time but I couldn't afford any at my cost because they were relatively expensive. I however resolved for them because they not only grow very fast but also reproduce twice a year, which will be a plus for me. It is a guarantee that I will have many of them within a short duration hence I can be able to achieve a lot through them. To add on that, I saved part of the cash which shall cater for any emergency that might arise and pay fees for my son once he transitions to secondary school in four months. I also bought two beds and a mattress at $2200 for my two children and I. Initially, we used to sleep on the floor which has been affecting our spinal cord for so long. We could barely do the house chores at times as a result. It is now a relief to my family because there is no more suffering. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my family which took us almost two weeks."

"The main challenge that my life was facing was shelter. My family of 9 used to sleep on mats placed on the ground because we did not have beds. When I got the second transfer, I bought three modern standard beds for $125. One of the beds belonged to me and my husband, the second one was for my three sons and the third bed was for my four daughters. Currently, my family is happy with the upgrade they feel from sleeping on the ground to a modern standard bed, it is truly an achievement. I also paid $60 school fees for my six primary school children so that they could not be sent home for fees but instead concentrate on their studies. Since I had started investing in goats from the first transfer, I saw it prudent to add two more goats whose cost was $70. For the remaining amount, my husband and I agreed to keep it for the family's upkeep because our sources of income are not consistent. My husband is a casual laborer and I rely on making and selling charcoals."

"I was extremely elated upon realizing the arrival of the transfers because this meant that I could continue to save up my money so that I could finally continue with the project of restoring my house. This was due to the fact that it was quite old and the iron sheets were worn out. Therefore I was looking forward to finally have the funds that would bring me more closer to having a comfortable home. That is why after withdrawing the transfers I ended up saving KES 2000 and proceeded to use the balance which was KES 1,000 to settle a debt that I had prior when I purchased a goat."

"I was quite happy to receive the funds when I did especially because at that time I had already settled tuition for my children so I could look into other things. Therefore after withdrawing the transfers I went ahead and purchased a goat which cost me KES 2,900 because I really wanted to invest in growing my farm hoping that it will assist me financially in the future. The balance of KES 100 is what I used as transportation fee when I went to fetch the goat."

"I had built a better and more spacious house but did not have the money to purchase the sofa set seats. it was so demoralizing especially when I have visitors at home, There were no seats to sit on. I spent $230 on purchasing sofa set seats. I am so happy because currently my house looks so decent and I no longer get worried whenever I have visitors. I spent $70 on purchasing a goat, Goats reproduce faster and this will help me in paying the school fees for my children since I would sell the young ones to get some money for the school fees. I spent $60 on purchasing two sacks of maize to feed my family. This is because we did not have enough in store at that time. The rest of the money I spent on purchasing household basic needs and clothes for my children. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards."

"Even though my husband is the sole breadwinner in our family, he is constantly overwhelmed by the responsibility because he does not have a formal job. He previously worked in the hotel industry but was laid off during the Covid-19 pandemic. I decided to make charcoal for sale to support our large family of seven members. I spent $15 on a young goat after receiving my recent transfer. I have always wanted to own livestock. I also paid the primary school fees for my two sons, Julius and Joseph. As a result, they owed me $10, which I paid. As a result, they have learned comfortably and with minimal disruption. Consequently, they had arrears of $10 that I settled. They have therefore learned comfortably with minimal disruption."

"Receiving money from GiveDirectly was a blessing from above. This made it easy for me to initiate a goat-rearing project where I used $175. This was not easy before, due to financial constraints. I had goats before but it forced me to sell them out because of the school fees responsibilities that were causing a daily headache. Thereafter, I thought of boosting my husband's business where we used $200. I am a farmer, married and blessed with four children. I am relieved that at least I have a goat project which is easy to multiply and also to maintain."

"I plan on venturing into business to supplement my income. I desire to start dairy goat farming for milk production. This will fetch more returns compared to cow's milk because of its high nutritional value. I will also purchase barbed wires. fencing my compound to enhance security."

"I bought a goat for $25 with a significant portion of my second transfer. I've always wanted to raise animals, sell some of them, and make a living doing it. I lacked the funds to purchase the livestock, so this was not feasible. Currently I'm content and confident that I can realize my dream. I bought food with the remaining $5. I run a charcoal business, but it's not doing well, so I don't make enough money to cover my basic needs ( buying food, water and medication). When I am unable to purchase food, my son, who is a water vendor in the community, frequently swings in to help. I'm relieved to have enough food for a week because it keeps me from going to bed hungry."
