"I have always dreamt of having a business of my own. My husband and I are unemployed and as a result we depend on casual opportunities like being hired to till or collect firewood and selling to my neighbours so that I can get a payment of kshs 100 which is very little to sustain my family's basic need. Now, receiving this transfer will mean that I'll be able to start a poultry farming as an income generating activity whereby i'll be able to sell poultry products like eggs, manure and chicken on a regular basis and thereby having returns that can be able to sustain me and my family."

"My usual day begins with grooming up, taking breakfast then rush to open up my business until 1pm then close and report for duty at mashimoni in a hardware shop. I close business at 6pm and return home to attend my group meeting to check on our poultry project, feed the chicken, lock them in and rush home to relax as i await my supper. During my free time I spend time with my children. I take the to their grandmother's place, play around with them teaching them how to ride their toys."

"Things are better for us looking back four months ago. I have plastered our house (it was earthen), we have a chair and a carpet too. It is a new look altogether and I like it. Since I bought chicken from the previous transfers, I have had a source of income in the past four months from selling eggs. I now have some cash to sustain us on food and toiletries until the next transfers from GiveDirectly comes. This was not the case earlier because I had to run around doing casual work to meet such needs."

"As a group we decided to contribute some amount of money to be able to buy land, build some houses and then rent them out. That is my first priority. Money from that will enable me plan for my future and as a group we will be able to help each other. I can also invest in opening an electronics business for my son. He did not do very well in his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (K.C.P.E) examations, so I would want him to run the business and be able stand on his own. Secondly, I want to invest in my exsiting business. I sell second hand clothes on the streets, I would want to buy new clothes and still sell. I can also open a shop( kiosk) and sell food stuff. Profits fro it will help me feed my family and pay house rent. I would want to start a business of cooking and selling chickens for people to buy. Lastly, I would want to buy a screen. My children go to neighbours to watch television, and they tend to get bored at home without it, thus I would want them to have a screen at home."

"In the next six months I expect to have my own tea plantation of 1 acre. The seedlings are currently in the seedbed awaiting maturity to be transplanted. I expect to have started to rear chicken for sale too. These two will be sources of income for us, which will translate to a better living standard for us. GiveDirectly funds have indeed helped us and we are grateful."
