"Before we start receiving the transfers, our fields under cultivation were small since we had insufficient resources to use. We have now received the transfers and we are really working hard to see that we improve our farming which in turn will improve our food security. The biggest difference now in my daily life is improved farming activities in our household. I have put a large piece of land under cultivation; something which was not happening before. I have also improved the livestock farming and currently, I have around 15 chickens which I am rearing. soon I am thinking of purchasing a heifer and in future, I will not be buying milk again."

"I spent my second transfer to finish my house which I had started building with my first transfer. I used to live in a small mud house with an old leaking roof which forced us to pile our household items in one corner to avoid being messed up with the rain. I am now living in a more spacious house and I no longer get worried about the rains messing us up. Moreover, I spent my transfer on buying two sacks of maize which we will consume as we wait for the next harvest. This would enhance food security in my family during this long dry season. I also spent my transfer to buy some chicken which I have wished to have since a flu outbreak swept the ones I had two years ago. I am hopeful that they lay eggs which we will consume as well as sell to raise some income for my household."

"My new or additional goal for my life for the next four months is to buy 10 chickens for raising. I look forward to raising poultry because they tend to multiply quickly and serves as a regular source of income. I will be getting eggs on a daily basis for consumption in our family, while selling the surplus to fetch some income. Besides, the chicken will multiply within a relatively short time, and subsequently, return on investment will be recovered after a short while. Eventually, I will sell the poultry to get money for investing in larger projects, especially land, business and agriculture."

"I expect my life to change in the next six months in that I will have saved money from my business of second-hand clothes to start a poultry keeping project. This new project will also be earning me an income from the sales of eggs at the center near home. My family will also have a balanced diet because of the availability of eggs and even chicken meat. We are so grateful for the support."

"GD transfers have enabled me to start a poultry business which has been my dream. I was not able to start the business due to my low income from ploughing other people's farm. The little I have always raised hardly feed my family. I have been able to save part of my transfers which I used to buy chicken and I know the profit from the business will help me sustain and improve my family life."

"When I received these transfers, I built a kitchen that I recently completed. I no longer use my one-roomed house for all purposes. My clothes and beddings will remain fresh and free from smoke as cooking now occurs in a designated room. Exposure to smoke and dust has reduced hence even the risk of contracting diseases has also reduced. I am also able to keep my child in school throughout her terms. I manage to pay school fees on time. My life is not like before this transfers especially because I have poultry keeping as an income-earning practice. All my needs are now financed from the sale of eggs I make from the chicken that GiveDirectly helped me to own."

"Buying milk has always been my daily routine. This is costly and at times, my family is forced to stay without taking breakfast when I do not have money. When I received my first transfers, I spared some amount and used it to buy a dairy cow. With this cow, I will be able to get some money through the sale of milk and also save the money I would have otherwise used in buying milk to use in buying other necessities. It has always been my dream to start a poultry project. For this reason, I used the remaining amount in building a chicken pen and in buying some chicken. With this project, I will be able to sell some eggs or the chicken and use the money to buy some of the household necessities whenever I have an emergency."
