"My new goal is to be able to start a small business of buying and selling cows. Right now we rely entirely on casual farming to put food on the table and to meet other familys expenses but with time, I have a goal of strting this business. Farming is often affected by prevailing weather conditions and yiels very little for the family but with the livestock business I can be sure to sustain my family well and even pay school fees for my last born son more comfortably. I look forward to accumulating enough capital to actualize this."

"Receiving this money means that I will build a new house and buy a dairy cow. I will spend about KES 30,000 because I currently live in a small hut that doubles up as a kitchen and a place to sleep in, together with my grown-up daughters, one of them has a baby. I will have some privacy if I build another house where I will be sleeping while they share the kitchen. I will then buy a cow at about KES 20,000 as an investment with an expectation that it will mature and produce milk and calves. I am hopeful that having both a new house and a cow will improve my life, a feat I could not achieve while relying on casual jobs to earn a living."

"Receiving this money means that I can start income-generating activities and stop working for other people. I will buy a second-hand motorcycle at KES 60,000. With it, I will start a taxi business that will earn me about KES 300 every day. This is a lot compared to the KES 150 that I get from working as an attendant at a meat vendor joint. I will then buy a cow at about KES 30,000 and poultry with the remaining amount. Livestock keeping will ensure that my wife is also actively generating money that we shall be using to buy food for the household."

"Receiving this money means food security for me . I used to do a grains business in a nearby town but as I grow older, I am retired to my small house where I rely on government social protection programs for food and daily needs. The cash that I receive from the program is irregularly issued, sometimes skipping several months before I get another payout. If I receive GiveDirectly transfers, I will buy food, mainly a bag of maize that will last me for about 4 months. I will also buy a dairy cow at about KES 40,000. From the cow's milk, I will get a continuous income that I will use to buy food and ensure that I do not stay hungry at any time in my life."

"I spent KES 22500 of my transfer to boost my livestock rearing by purchasing one cow and one goat. This will ensure that I have a constant supply of milk for my kids as well as long-term savings for their education. I am intending to sell the offspring once they start to reproduce. In addition, I bought 3 mattresses for KES 14,500. These were proper beddings for my family because we were using old and worn-out beddings which were not comfortable. I also saved KES 24,000 that I am planning to use in clearing the fee arrears for my 5 children once the school reopens."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well to give us money directly. For example, in my village, every household in our village has an Iron roofed house. Additionally, some bought dairy cows because it's the main source of livelihood in our place."

"With the receipt of both transfers from Givedirectly, my household has seen a huge transformation. My goal right now is to purchase a dairy cow and sheep so that I can start zero-grazing because of the small piece of land which I have. We have joined a savings Sacco with my wife so that we can save towards achieving our plans of dairy farming."

"For the past one year, I have been spending a lot in order to obtain milk for my daughter who is barely 1 year old. This had made my life relatively expensive since I did no have any cow. As a result, I used to buy 1 liter of milk per day at KES 60. When I got enrolled in the GD program, I prioritized to buy a lactating cow which currently gives me 5 liters of milk every day. I am proud of GiveDirectly because courtesy of its transfers, I am nowadays able to sell a surplus of 2 littres of milk everyday. My additional goal is to complete building my new iron roofed house. This will be a very spacious house with two bedrooms. As a result, I shall no longer be worried whenever I have some guests around."
